Full Description
Amalfi harbour at golden hour
The tour leaves from the small harbour of Amalfi, right below Piazza Duomo, just as the day-trippers leave and the town becomes calmer. From the water the view back to Amalfi is superb: the cathedral's tiled bell tower, the white houses climbing the Valley of the Mills and, on the next bay, tiny Atrani with its church above the beach. Your skipper explains how Amalfi was a powerful maritime republic between the 9th and 11th centuries, trading across the Mediterranean.
Starting at 18:30 gives you the softest light of the day for photos, especially from late spring to early autumn, when the sun sets well after the boat leaves. If you are wondering what to do in Amalfi in the evening, a sunset boat ride is the perfect answer, and you are back in time for dinner in town.
Conca dei Marini and the swim stop
Heading west, the boat follows the cliffs to Conca dei Marini, a village of white houses on a green headland guarded by a round watchtower from the 16th century, when such towers warned of pirate raids. Below the road is the entrance to the Emerald Grotto, a sea cave found by a fisherman in 1932 and known for its glowing green water; visits inside are separate, but you pass along this beautiful stretch of coast.
The coves here have some of the clearest water on the coast, and your skipper chooses a sheltered spot for the swim stop. Masks and snorkels are on board, together with flotation devices, so even less confident swimmers can enjoy the sea. After a swim, the freshwater shower and a snack under the canopy are very welcome.
The Furore fjord and Praiano
Further along lies the Furore fjord, a narrow gorge where a mountain stream meets the sea beneath an arched road bridge about 30 metres high. Old fishermen's houses and former paper mills cling to the walls, and the little beach at the bottom is almost hidden. From a boat the fjord is especially striking in the evening, when the light falls deep into the gorge.
Next is Praiano, a quiet town spread along the cliffs between Amalfi and Positano. Because it faces west, Praiano is known locally as the best place on the coast for sunsets, and its tiled church dome shines in the last light. Along this stretch the skipper slows down by grottoes and rock formations you can only see from the sea.
Sunset towards Positano
As the sun drops, the headlands towards Positano turn to silhouettes and the sea takes on shades of gold and pink. On clear evenings you can make out the Li Galli islands far to the west, linked by legend to the sirens of ancient myth. This is the moment most guests remember, quiet and unhurried, with only the sound of the water around a small wooden boat.
Then the boat turns back towards Amalfi, where the lights of the town start to appear along the cliffs. The whole outing lasts about two hours, so it fits easily after a day of sightseeing. Is an Amalfi sunset cruise worth it? For couples and families, it is a simple and truly memorable way to see the coast.
