Full Description
Mount Vesuvius and its crater
Vesuvius rises about 1,281 metres above the Bay of Naples, and it is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted in the last century. The eruption of AD 79 destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the last one, in 1944, is still remembered by locals. From the rim, you look into a crater roughly 500 metres wide and 200 metres deep, where steam sometimes rises from the rock.
A Mount Vesuvius tour is a memorable way to understand the landscape of Campania. Is it worth climbing Vesuvius? Yes, for the view alone: on a clear day you see the whole Gulf of Naples, Capri and the Sorrento peninsula. Your digital guide explains the geology and the history as you walk.
The walk to the crater rim
The bus drops you at the trailhead at about 1,000 metres, and from there a wide gravel path climbs for roughly 20 to 30 minutes to the crater rim. It is steep in places, but not technical, and there are viewpoints where you can stop and rest. Wear closed sturdy shoes and bring water.
It can be much windier and cooler at the top than in Naples, so take a jacket even in summer. Access to the path can be restricted in bad weather or when the park authority decides, so the visit depends on conditions on the day.
Vesuvius National Park and the Gulf of Naples
Mount Vesuvius sits in a national park that covers the volcano and its slopes, with pine woods, Mediterranean scrub and rare plants that grow in the volcanic soil. Along the trail your digital guide points out the different layers of lava and ash from past eruptions.
From the upper path you enjoy a panorama across Naples, the islands of Ischia and Capri and the Sorrento coast, with the outline of the Somma rim curving around the cone. Late morning offers the clearest views in most seasons, while early departures and late afternoon are quieter if the schedule allows.
Choosing your option and getting to Vesuvius
The default option includes a return bus transfer from Naples, the fast-track ticket and the digital guide, and the trip takes about three hours. A second option departs from Pompeii and takes about two and a half hours, and the entry-only option is for travellers with their own transport who want a fast-track ticket.
Getting to Vesuvius without your own car is much easier with a bus option, as public transport is limited on the upper slopes. Check the departure details on your voucher and be at the meeting point on time, since buses run on a fixed schedule.
