Full Description
The Vatican Scavi (Necropolis) beneath St Peter’s
The Scavi, meaning excavations, are the ancient burial ground lying under St Peter’s Basilica. In the first centuries AD, this hillside was a cemetery along a road outside the city, lined with family tombs. When the basilica was built in the fourth century, the builders levelled the hill and built over it, sealing the necropolis until excavations in the twentieth century revealed it.
A Vatican Scavi tour lets you walk along a narrow ancient street between tombs decorated with stucco, mosaics and inscriptions. Access is normally limited to small groups with special permission, and visitors are generally required to be at least fifteen years old, so this tour is a rare chance. Photography is not allowed below.
The Tomb of St Peter
The heart of the visit is the area beneath the high altar, where tradition places the burial of St Peter. Excavators in the 1940s found a modest shrine set against a red plastered wall, with graffiti nearby that refers to Peter. The site has long been a focus for pilgrims and for scholars of early Christianity.
Your guide explains what archaeologists found, what remains debated and why Christians built the basilica exactly here. Whatever your beliefs, standing at the spot that shaped the design of the church above is memorable. The atmosphere is quiet and respectful, so listen carefully.
St Peter’s Basilica with Skip-the-Line Entry
After the Scavi, you go up into St Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, using skip-the-line entry so you avoid long security queues. Your guide gives a live lecture on its history and best-known works, including Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s bronze canopy above the altar and the great dome.
Many people ask whether St Peter’s Basilica is worth visiting, and with a guide the answer is clearly yes. You leave understanding what lies beneath and above, from the ancient necropolis to Renaissance and Baroque art. An optional visit to the dome is not included in this tour.
Getting There and Dress Code
The basilica is in Vatican City, next to St Peter’s Square, and is an easy walk from Ottaviano metro station. The exact meeting point is given in your confirmation, so arrive with time to spare because security checks can take a while.
A strict dress code applies: shoulders and knees must be covered, both for the Scavi and the basilica. Bring a valid photo ID, wear comfortable shoes, and avoid large bags, which are not allowed through security. The best time to visit is early in the day, and tours run on days when the Scavi is open.
