Full Description
Pompeii: a Roman town preserved by ash
Pompeii was a prosperous port town of about 11,000 people when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 and buried it under metres of ash and pumice. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with straight paved streets, shops, bakeries, theatres, baths and houses whose walls still carry painted decoration.
Your guide leads you through the Forum, the amphitheatre and several houses and explains how ordinary people lived, worked and shopped. Fast-track entry saves time at the gate, and if you are asking how long you need at Pompeii, the guided visit with free time takes several hours, so wear comfortable shoes and a hat.
Mount Vesuvius: the crater hike
Vesuvius rises to about 1,280 metres above the Bay of Naples and is the only active volcano on the European mainland. The tour takes you by coach up the mountain road to a car park at high altitude, and from there you walk a gravel path to the crater rim, a climb of some twenty to thirty minutes at a gentle pace.
At the top you look into the crater and see steam rising from cracks, with the Bay of Naples spread out below. Many travellers ask whether the Vesuvius hike is difficult; it is short but steep and dusty, so bring sturdy shoes, water and a windproof layer, because the summit is cooler than Rome.
Choosing your version: geologist, small group or Pompeii only
The standard option combines Pompeii, lunch and the crater hike with a guide. A second option replaces the crater climb with a scenic walk led by a professional geologist, who explains the volcanic landscape and its rocks, while another keeps the group to a maximum of eight guests for a more personal day.
If you prefer to skip the mountain, the Pompeii-only option adds time in the new excavation areas and does not include lunch or Vesuvius. Your choice changes the length of the day, which runs from about nine to twelve hours, so compare the options in the booking panel before you decide.
Rome to Pompeii: planning a long day
The journey from Rome to Pompeii takes around two and a half to three hours each way by coach, and the group meets in Rome early in the morning. The coach has air conditioning and Wi-Fi, and your tour leader explains the plan and the timing as you drive south.
Because the day is long, it works best if you arrive rested and travel light. Hotel pickup is not included, and the exact meeting point is on your voucher, so plan how you will reach it in the morning and leave a margin for city traffic.
