Full Description

Positano: pastel houses above the sea

Positano is the postcard town of the Amalfi Coast, with pink, peach and terracotta houses stacked so steeply that streets turn into staircases. The dome of the church of Santa Maria Assunta, covered in coloured tiles, marks the centre of town and sits just above the pebbled beach.

Free time here is about two and a half hours, enough to walk down to Marina Grande, browse boutiques for ceramics and linen, and find a viewpoint. If you are wondering whether a Positano day trip from Rome is worth the long drive, the boat approach alone, with the whole town rising from the water, is the moment most visitors remember.

Amalfi: cathedral, lanes and maritime history

Amalfi was a wealthy maritime republic from the ninth to the eleventh century, and its old harbour once launched trading ships across the Mediterranean. The Cathedral of Saint Andrew rises above a broad staircase, with a striped facade, a bronze door made in Constantinople and a peaceful cloister.

Behind the seafront the streets are lined with small shops, and the town is known for paper making and lemon products. Around an hour and a half is allowed here, so decide early between the cathedral, a coffee and a walk, and remember modest dress with covered shoulders and knees for the church.

The coastal boat cruise

With the standard option you board a boat at Salerno and cruise along the coast to Positano, then on to Amalfi, so you see cliffs, coves and villages from the water. The sea lets you see the shape of the coast, with terraced lemon groves and watchtowers on headlands, in a way that the road cannot.

Sea conditions can change plans, and boat services may be cancelled in rough weather for safety, in which case we offer an alternative. Those who get seasick should choose the Positano and Sorrento option, which travels by land instead.

The Sorrento option and the drive south

The second option skips the cruise and drives along the coast to Sorrento, an elegant clifftop town with a lively old centre and views across the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. You have around two hours there for lanes, shops and viewpoints.

Both options begin with a long drive south from Rome, with a rest stop on the way, so the coach and the tour leader make the day easy. Timings depend on traffic, and the whole trip is best treated as a long day out, with light luggage and snacks.
