Full Description
The Vatican Museums: Five Centuries of Collecting
The Vatican Museums began in 1506, when Pope Julius II displayed the newly unearthed Laocoön sculpture in a courtyard of his palace. Today the collections fill some 54 galleries, and visitors walk around seven kilometres of halls if they see everything, which is why a Vatican Museums guided tour saves so much time and energy.
Your guide leads you to the essentials: the Octagonal Courtyard with the Laocoön and the Apollo Belvedere, the round hall with its vast porphyry basin, the Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of Maps, whose 40 painted maps of Italy date from the 1580s. Skip-the-line Vatican Museums tickets mean you start inside instead of in the queue.
The Raphael Rooms
Four rooms in the papal apartments were painted by Raphael and his workshop between 1508 and 1524, and they rank among the high points of the Renaissance. The most famous, the Room of the Signatura, holds The School of Athens, with Plato and Aristotle at its centre surrounded by the philosophers of antiquity, some painted with the faces of Raphael's contemporaries.
Most guided routes through the museums pass through or beside these rooms on the way to the Sistine Chapel, depending on crowd management on the day. One of our afternoon options focuses specifically on the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, while the recommended option continues to St Peter's Basilica.
The Sistine Chapel
Built for Pope Sixtus IV in the 1470s and still used for the conclave that elects each new pope, the Sistine Chapel is decorated with frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino and Ghirlandaio on its walls. Between 1508 and 1512 Michelangelo painted the ceiling, with the Creation of Adam at its heart, and from 1536 to 1541 he added the Last Judgment on the altar wall.
Silence is requested and photography is not allowed inside, so your guide explains the frescoes before you enter. Take your time to look up and find the scenes of Genesis and the prophets and sibyls around them. For most visitors the Sistine Chapel is the moment that makes a Vatican tour unforgettable.
St Peter's Basilica and St Peter's Square
Rebuilt from 1506 and consecrated in 1626, St Peter's Basilica stands over the tomb of Saint Peter and is crowned by the dome designed by Michelangelo. Inside you see his marble Pietà, carved when he was only 24, Bernini's bronze canopy over the papal altar and the gilded Chair of Saint Peter in the apse.
Outside, Bernini's two curving colonnades embrace St Peter's Square like open arms. Entry to the basilica itself is free, but the security queue can be long; on the recommended option your guide takes you there after the museums. The Vatican Museums opening hours change on religious holidays, and the museums are closed on most Sundays.
