Full Description

Piazza del Campo, the heart of Siena

Every private Siena tour comes back to Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Laid out in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries on the meeting point of the city's three hills, it slopes like an open shell towards the town hall, and its brick paving is divided into sections by lines of white stone. At the top stands the Fonte Gaia, the marble fountain that once brought the first fresh water into the square.

Your guide explains how the square still hosts the Palio twice a year, on 2 July and 16 August, when riders from the city's districts race bareback around its edge in a contest that goes back to the Middle Ages. With a private guide you can sit on the warm bricks, ask every question and take photos at your own pace before moving on.

The Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia

The Palazzo Pubblico, built around 1300, was the seat of the city's republican government and remains Siena's town hall. Its curved brick façade follows the line of the square, and inside, the Civic Museum keeps rooms painted with some of the most important medieval frescoes in Italy, including the famous scenes of good and bad government.

Beside it rises the Torre del Mangia, more than one hundred metres tall and one of the highest medieval towers in Italy, designed to rival the cathedral's bell tower. Museum and tower tickets are not included, but your guide can suggest how to fit them into the rest of your day. The tower is closed in bad weather, and the climb is narrow, so it is best done early.

The Basilica of San Domenico

On a hill at the western side of the old town stands the Basilica of San Domenico, a vast brick church begun in the thirteenth century in the plain, powerful Gothic style of the time. Its bare interior is lit by tall windows, and side chapels hold some of the city's most venerated works of art and relics.

From the terrace beside the church, one of the best viewpoints in Siena opens across the green valley of Fontebranda to the striped cathedral and its dome on the opposite hill. Your guide often begins or ends here, close to the meeting point, so you start the tour with a complete picture of the city's layout and its hills.

The contrade and the medieval districts

Siena's historic centre is divided into districts called contrade, each with its own name, animal emblem, colours, small museum, church and fountain. As you move through the lanes, your guide points out their plaques and flags and explains how loyalty to a contrada shapes daily life, celebrations and the Palio itself.

The route passes the great medieval streets such as Banchi di Sopra and Via di Città, lined with noble palaces, the elegant Loggia della Mercanzia where merchants once met, and quiet corners such as the Fontebranda fountain below the hill. Is Siena worth visiting for a full day? Yes, and starting with a guide makes the rest of your time much richer.

Optional visit to Siena Cathedral

At the end of the tour you can choose to continue inside Siena Cathedral with your guide. Built mainly in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, it is clad in bands of white and dark green marble and topped by a dome and bell tower. Inside, the inlaid marble floor covers the whole church with scenes in coloured stone, and the Piccolomini Library glows with frescoes and painted ceilings.

The cathedral ticket is not included and is bought separately; your guide will help you plan the visit, which usually takes about an hour. Siena Cathedral opening hours vary with the season and religious services, and shoulders and knees must be covered. The best time to visit Siena is spring or autumn, when the lanes are pleasant and the light is soft.
