Full Description
Petra: The Siq and the Treasury
Petra, the rose-red capital of the ancient Nabataeans, is carved straight into the sandstone of southern Jordan. A visit starts at the visitor centre and follows the Siq, a narrow, twisting gorge whose walls rise up to 80 metres, until the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) appears, its carved façade glowing pink in the sun.
This first part is the heart of any Petra day tour from Amman and takes about 30 minutes each way on foot. The Treasury was probably a royal tomb from the 1st century AD, and the urn on top still shows bullet marks from Bedouins who believed it held gold.
Exploring the Ancient City of Petra
Past the Treasury the valley opens into the Street of Facades, a Nabataean theatre cut into the rock for several thousand spectators, and the Royal Tombs, including the striped Urn Tomb. Further on, the Colonnaded Street and the Great Temple show the city's Roman period.
On this tour you explore Petra independently, as a local guide in Petra is not included; licensed guides can be hired at the visitor centre if you want one. Is Petra worth visiting in one day? Absolutely: in about four hours you can see the main sights. The Monastery requires a steep climb and extra time, so plan carefully.
Wadi Rum Jeep Tour
In the afternoon you drive to Wadi Rum, the Valley of the Moon, a UNESCO-listed protected desert of red sand and giant sandstone massifs. Here you switch to a 4x4 jeep with a local Bedouin driver for a two-hour Wadi Rum jeep tour.
Typical stops include red sand dunes you can climb, Khazali Canyon with ancient Thamudic and Nabataean inscriptions, natural rock bridges and viewpoints linked to Lawrence of Arabia. The light in late afternoon is soft and golden, perfect for photos before the long drive back to Amman. Fine sand gets everywhere in the open jeeps, so keep cameras and phones in a bag between stops.
