Full Description

Petra and the Siq

Petra was the capital of the Nabataeans, a trading people who grew rich on the incense and spice routes and carved tombs, temples and houses into the rose-coloured sandstone. Abandoned after earthquakes and long hidden from the outside world, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Anyone planning a Petra day trip from Amman will find it is a long drive, about three hours each way, but the reward justifies the early start.

The entrance leads you down a wide path to the Siq, a winding gorge more than a kilometre long, with walls that rise high on both sides and almost close overhead. Light changes with every bend and carved channels still run along the rock. The Siq builds the suspense, so walk it slowly. Your driver brings you to the visitor centre, and your tickets are included in this option.

The Treasury and the Street of Facades

At the end of the Siq the gorge opens and the Treasury, Al-Khazneh, appears: a tall façade of columns, carved figures and a crowning urn cut directly into the cliff. It was probably a royal tomb, and its colour changes from pink to orange through the day. Mornings usually offer the best light and the fewest crowds, which is why a 06:30 pickup matters.

Beyond the Treasury the valley widens into the Street of Facades, lined with tombs, then the Roman-style theatre and the Royal Tombs on the hillside. The walk from the entrance to the theatre area is about two kilometres each way, mostly flat, and the full site is much larger. Most visitors on a one-day tour spend three to four hours here; the Monastery needs a long climb of hundreds of steps and may not fit in this schedule. A local guide is not included, but you can explore at your own pace.

Wadi Rum and the jeep tour

Wadi Rum, also called the Valley of the Moon, is a protected desert of red sand, towering granite and sandstone mountains and narrow canyons in southern Jordan, listed by UNESCO for both its natural and cultural value. The Bedouin people have lived here for generations, and ancient rock carvings record the passage of earlier travellers. The colours deepen towards late afternoon and the light at sunset is special.

In this option a jeep tour of about two hours takes you through the desert in a 4x4 with a local driver. Typical stops include a red sand dune, a viewpoint of a natural rock arch and a shaded canyon, depending on the route and time. Hold on, bring a scarf for dust and expect a bumpy ride. If you are asking whether Wadi Rum is worth visiting on a day trip from Amman, the answer is yes, as long as you accept the long hours.

A long day from Amman: timings

The day is about fourteen hours from pickup at 06:30 to return. The road south from Amman takes around three hours to Petra, then roughly two hours on to Wadi Rum, and about four hours back to Amman at the end of the evening. Our driver stops for comfort breaks and plans the rhythm so you are not rushed at the main sights.

Because a Petra and Wadi Rum day tour is demanding, wear sturdy shoes, drink water regularly and keep the afternoon snacks light. If you prefer a slower pace, tell us when you book and we will suggest staying overnight in the south. The vehicle is yours alone for the whole day, so you can rest on the road and stop for photographs whenever the scenery tempts you.

Choosing the right private option

There are three private options for this route. The most complete, the default shown on this page, includes private transport, the Wadi Rum jeep tour and entry tickets to both sites. A second option includes the transport and the jeep tour but not the tickets, and a third covers private transport only, without tickets, jeep tour or local guide.

All options are priced per person for a small private group. If you already hold a pass for Petra, or want to buy tickets yourself, the lower options may suit you. For most travellers the all-in version is simplest because it removes ticket queues and extra payments on the day. Ask our team on WhatsApp if you are unsure which fits your plan.
