Full Description

Petra, the Rose-Red City

Petra was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom more than 2,000 years ago, a trading city carved directly into pink sandstone cliffs. Listed by UNESCO in 1985 and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it is Jordan's most famous sight. You enter through the Siq, a winding gorge about 1.2 kilometres long, before the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) suddenly appears through the gap.

Beyond the Treasury, the Street of Facades, the Roman-style Theatre, the Royal Tombs and the Colonnaded Street fill the valley. Allow at least four hours; fit walkers can climb the 800-plus steps to the Monastery. For a Petra tour from Amman, this is the place to wear your best walking shoes.

Wadi Rum Desert and the Overnight Camp

Wadi Rum, also called the Valley of the Moon, is a protected desert of red sand and towering sandstone mountains in southern Jordan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes Jabal Umm ad Dami, the country's highest peak, and famous from Lawrence of Arabia and many science-fiction films shot here.

You arrive in the late afternoon in time for sunset, then settle into a deluxe tent with its own bathroom and air-conditioning, reserved only for your booking. After dark the sky fills with stars far from city lights. Jeep excursions to canyons, rock bridges and dunes run from the camps; ask us which activities your option covers.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea sits about 430 metres below sea level, the lowest point on the Earth's land surface. Its water is roughly ten times saltier than the ocean, so you float without any effort, a bucket-list moment for most visitors to Jordan.

The mineral-rich mud along the shore is famous for the skin, and many people cover themselves in it before rinsing off in the sea. Do not shave the day before, keep water away from your eyes and never swim face-down. Access to a beach facility with showers depends on the option you choose.

Planning a Jordan Road Trip from Amman

The route follows the Desert Highway south from Amman to Petra (around three hours), continues to Wadi Rum (under two hours) and returns along the Dead Sea Highway. Travelling with a small group saves you from driving long desert roads yourself.

The best time to visit Petra and Wadi Rum is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when days are warm and nights mild. In winter the desert can be cold at night, and summer afternoons are very hot. Many travellers buy the Jordan Pass before arrival, which covers the visa and entry to Petra and Wadi Rum.
