Overview

This parasailing experience lifts you above the turquoise lagoon of Maafushi, the busiest local island of Kaafu Atoll, for a view of sandbanks, reef edges and the deep blue beyond that no boat can give. The session lasts about fifteen minutes from briefing to landing: an English-speaking crew fits your harness and life jacket, explains the safety rules, and a speedboat tows the parachute smoothly up from the deck, with no running and no jumping. Photos and videos of your flight are included, so your hands are free to hold on and look. Starts are hourly from 09:00 to 17:00 on Aabaadhee Hingun Road. It suits couples, families and friends wanting a short thrill between snorkelling trips, with no swimming skill required for the flight itself.

Full Description

Maafushi, the local-island hub of South Malé Atoll

Maafushi lies in the southern part of Kaafu Atoll, about twenty-seven kilometres south of Malé: half an hour by speedboat or around ninety minutes on the public ferry. Since local islands opened to tourism it has grown into the busiest guesthouse island in the country, with a bikini beach, dive and water-sports centres along the shore and dozens of small hotels in its sandy streets. It is the base most travellers choose for things to do in the Maldives on a budget.

The island works because everything is close: the harbour, the beach, the shops and the water-sports jetties are all within a few minutes' walk. Maafushi excursions range from nurse-shark and sandbank trips to sunset cruises, and parasailing is the one that takes fifteen minutes rather than half a day, which makes it easy to slot into any afternoon. How to get to Maafushi is simple too; scheduled speedboats leave Malé and the airport several times a day and most guesthouses book the seat for you.

The Maafushi lagoon from the air

From the boat the lagoon is a strip of pale turquoise; from fifty metres up it becomes a map. The shallow sand flats glow almost white, the reef edge draws a dark line where the coral drops away, and beyond it the water turns the deep blue of the open atoll. Neighbouring islands come into view, with the sandbanks of South Malé Atoll scattered between them, and on a clear day you can follow the line of the atoll rim far to the south.

The flight is quiet once you are up: the boat's engine fades and there is only the wind in the lines and the colour below. Keep an eye on the shallows, because from above you can often spot rays gliding over the sand and the shadows of small reef sharks along the drop-off, all seen from a distance and left undisturbed. Morning flights usually have the calmest air and the clearest water, while late-afternoon flights add softer light and long shadows on the sand.

How the parasailing flight works

You meet the crew on Aabaadhee Hingun Road and walk to the boat. On board, the safety briefing covers the harness, the signals the crew uses and what to do at landing; a life jacket is fitted before the harness and stays on throughout. The parachute is launched from a platform at the back of the boat: the winch pays out the line as the boat picks up speed, and you lift off the deck smoothly, with no running start and no jump from the water.

The flight itself lasts several minutes at height, with the boat tracing a wide circle over the lagoon so you see the island, the reef and the open sea in turn. Landing is the same in reverse, the winch drawing you gently back onto the deck. The crew photographs and films the whole flight, and the photos and videos are included, so you can leave your own phone safely in the boat. The whole experience, from briefing to stepping off, takes about fifteen minutes.

Meeting point, timing and practical points

Flights start hourly from 09:00 to 17:00, and you choose your slot in the booking panel. The meeting point is on Aabaadhee Hingun Road in Maafushi, a short walk from every guesthouse on the island; transfers to Maafushi from Malé or other islands are not included, so plan the flight for a day you are already on the island. Food and drinks are not included, and a fifteen-minute session leaves plenty of time for lunch before or after.

Wear swimwear or light clothes you do not mind getting a little spray on, secure your sunglasses and leave loose items with the crew. Parasailing in the Maldives depends on wind and sea conditions, and the crew may move your slot to a calmer hour or another day for safety; our team tells you on WhatsApp as early as possible. The best time to visit Maafushi for calm lagoon water is the dry season from December to April, though flights run through most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

Each flight is for the guest or pair in the harness, and the boat may carry other guests waiting for their turn. The booking panel shows the one option available; message us on WhatsApp if you want to arrange flights for a group one after another.

Can we change the timing?

Yes, within the hourly slots from 09:00 to 17:00; choose your hour when booking. The crew may move your slot to a calmer hour or another day if wind or sea conditions require it.

How many people can fly at once?

Flights are usually one or two guests at a time depending on weight and conditions, which the crew confirms when you book. Larger groups fly in turns from the same boat.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is counted per person for each flight. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of the option for your date and time.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You walk to the meeting point on Aabaadhee Hingun Road, a few minutes from every guesthouse on Maafushi. Transfers to the island are not included.

What is included?

The parasailing flight, the safety briefing, a life jacket and harness, photos and videos of the flight and an English-speaking crew. Food, drinks, transfers and gratuities are not included.

How long does it take?

About fifteen minutes from briefing to landing, with several minutes in the air.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You take off from and land on the boat deck, and a life jacket is worn throughout, so swimming skill is not needed for the flight itself. Tell the crew if you are not a swimmer so they can brief you accordingly.

Is it suitable for children and for guests with reduced mobility?

Children can fly with an adult's consent and within the crew's weight limits; tell us ages when you book. The harness and boat platform make it unsuitable for guests with back, neck or heart conditions or significantly reduced mobility.

What should I bring?

Swimwear or light clothes, secure sunglasses, sunscreen and a towel. Your camera is not needed, as photos and videos are included.

What is the best time of day and season for parasailing in Maafushi?

Morning slots usually have the calmest air and clearest water; late afternoon gives softer light. December to April brings the steadiest conditions, and flights run on most days through the year.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date and start time in the booking panel and send the request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the exact meeting spot on Aabaadhee Hingun Road.
