Nurse Sharks, Coral Reef and Sandbank Snorkelling Trip from Malé

Overview

This shared half-day snorkelling trip is the easiest way to see the famous Maldives water without leaving the capital for a resort. A shaded speedboat with an on-board toilet collects you at your Malé or Hulhumalé hotel, and in about three hours you snorkel at a nurse shark point, drift over a living coral reef and step onto a white Kaafu Atoll sandbank. A snorkelling guide and a lifeguard are on board, and masks, gear, life jackets and mineral water are provided, so complete beginners are welcome. The route is the same for everyone on board, and the morning departure and compact timing make it ideal for a stopover day, for families and for travellers looking for things to do in Maldives on a budget without a resort stay.

Full Description

Malé and Hulhumalé: departure from the capital

Malé is the capital of the Maldives, a dense island city of narrow lanes, mosques and a busy harbour, and Hulhumalé is the newer reclaimed island linked to it by the Sinamalé Bridge, where many visitors stay for the airport and the long public beach. Both are the base for this trip: we pick you up at your hotel in Malé or Hulhumalé up to thirty minutes before the start, drive you to the jetty and the speedboat leaves at ten in the morning.

If you have searched for a Malé snorkelling trip or an excursion from Hulhumalé that does not require a resort transfer, this is it. The boat is shaded, has an on-board toilet, and carries life jackets, all safety equipment and a lifeguard. You return to the same jetty about three hours later and are dropped at your hotel, which leaves the afternoon free for a Malé city tour or a late flight.

Nurse Shark Point: swim with nurse sharks in the Maldives

The first stop is a nurse shark point in Kaafu Atoll, a short speedboat ride from the capital. Tawny nurse sharks are slow, bottom-dwelling animals that rest on the sand in clear water a few metres deep and glide calmly beneath the snorkellers. They have small teeth made for crushing crabs and molluscs, take no interest in people and are considered harmless, which is why 'swim with nurse sharks Maldives' has become one of the most popular things to do near Malé.

The guide explains the rules before anyone enters the water: float quietly, keep your fins up, never touch, chase or feed. Then you drift above the sharks with a life jacket if you want one, while the lifeguard keeps watch from the boat. Sightings are very reliable at this point but, as with all wild animals, cannot be guaranteed.

Coral reef snorkelling in Kaafu Atoll

The second stop is a healthy coral reef on the edge of the lagoon. Snorkelling in the Maldives is famous because the reef drops steeply from knee-deep shallows into blue water, so from the surface you look down on table corals, staghorn thickets and brain corals alive with parrotfish, butterflyfish, oriental sweetlips, clownfish in their anemones and the occasional turtle or black-tip reef shark cruising far below.

Visibility is often twenty metres or more in the dry season from November to April, the best time to visit Malé for snorkelling. The guide points out what you are seeing and keeps the group together; beginners can hold the float ring. You spend roughly half an hour on the reef, long enough to swim its length and come back along the drop-off.

The sandbank: a white island in the lagoon

The last stop is a sandbank, a bar of pure white coral sand that rises out of the turquoise lagoon with nothing on it but footprints. Sandbanks are formed by the current piling broken coral and shell on the leeward side of a reef, and some disappear at high tide, so the crew times the visit for when the sand is wide and dry.

This is the photo stop of the trip: the colour of the water changes from clear to pale green to deep blue in a few metres, and the sandbank is the perfect place for a swim and a float. There is no shade, so a hat and reef-safe sunscreen matter here more than anywhere. After about half an hour the speedboat heads back to the capital and the hotel drop-off.

Why a half-day snorkelling trip from Malé works so well

Most visitors assume the Maldives underwater world is only reachable from a resort, but Kaafu Atoll, the ring of reefs around the capital, holds shark points, coral gardens and sandbanks within a short speedboat ride of Malé. This trip is built for people on a short stay: a stopover between flights, a few nights in Hulhumalé or a Malé hotel before a resort, or a budget trip based on local islands.

The sea is calmest in the morning, which is why departure is at ten, and the dry season from November to April gives the best visibility. The trip runs in the south-west monsoon months too, with the crew choosing the most sheltered points of the day. Meals and underwater photos are not included, so have breakfast before pickup and bring a waterproof camera if you want your own pictures.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. Pickup and drop-off at hotels in Malé and Hulhumalé are included; you pick your hotel when booking.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The three stops are fixed on a shared boat, though the crew may change the order for sea conditions. For your own route and timing, ask our team about a private speedboat.
