Discover Scuba Diving Try-Dive for Beginners, Malé
Overview
This discover scuba diving session is the standard try-dive for beginners in the Malé area: no experience or licence needed, just a willingness to breathe underwater. A certified instructor gives a pre-dive briefing, teaches the basic skills in shallow water, then leads one guided open-water dive on a reef near the capital where turtles and reef fish live. Full scuba equipment, a wetsuit if needed, permits and dive fees are included, and the group is limited to four so the instructor can watch everyone closely. Sessions run between 07:30 and 17:30 and last two to three hours; a second option with one-to-one instructor guidance is also available. It suits first-timers, couples and families with teenagers who want to try scuba diving in the Maldives before committing to a course.

Full Description
The reefs of the Malé area, where the dive takes place
The capital sits inside North Malé Atoll, and within a short ride of the dive centre are sheltered house reefs and lagoon walls that are ideal for a first dive. The water is warm all year, usually between twenty-seven and thirty degrees, and visibility of twenty metres or more is normal on a calm day. Beginners dive the shallow top of the reef, where hard and soft corals grow in the light and the fish life is densest: butterflyfish, parrotfish, clownfish in their anemones and often a turtle resting on the coral.
The instructor chooses the site on the day according to conditions and keeps the dive inside the depth limits set for try-dives, so the experience is gentle rather than deep. For many guests this first look at the reef below the surface is the moment the Maldives makes sense: snorkelling shows you the top, scuba diving in Malé shows you the whole wall, with the deep blue of the atoll channel beyond it.
The briefing and shallow-water skills
The session begins at the dive centre in the Malé area with a pre-dive briefing. The instructor explains how the equipment works, how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalise your ears as you go down and the hand signals you will use underwater; a short medical questionnaire is completed at the same time. You are then fitted with a mask, fins, a buoyancy jacket, a regulator and a tank, plus a wetsuit if the water or the season calls for it.
The first time in the water is in a shallow, protected spot where you can stand. Here you practise the basic skills every diver learns: breathing calmly, clearing a little water from the mask, recovering the regulator if it slips out and adjusting buoyancy with your jacket. Nothing moves on until you are comfortable, and the small group of four means the instructor is always within arm's reach.
The guided open-water dive
Once the skills are done, the group moves to the reef for the main event: one guided open-water dive led by the certified instructor, who stays close to each guest for the whole dive and manages depth and direction so that you can concentrate on looking. The dive usually lasts thirty to forty minutes and stays shallow, following the reef edge where the colours are brightest and the fish are busiest.
Expect clouds of reef fish, moray eels peering from holes, perhaps a turtle or a reef shark in the distance, and the strange silence of breathing underwater. If you would like a record of it, underwater photos and videos can be arranged on request for an extra charge. Back at the surface the instructor rinses the gear and logs the dive for you; the session counts as a first experience if you later decide to take a full open-water course.
The dive centre, timing and practical points
The meeting point is the dive centre in the Malé area, and the exact address and time are confirmed after booking; transport to and from the centre is not included, so a taxi or a short walk from a Malé or Hulhumalé hotel is the usual way to arrive. Sessions start at various times through the day between 07:30 and 17:30, which makes it easy to fit a try-dive around a city tour or a boat trip. The whole experience, from briefing to rinsing off, takes about two to three hours.
Do I need a licence to dive in the Maldives is the question we hear most, and for this session the answer is no; the try-dive is designed for complete beginners. You should be in reasonable health and able to swim comfortably. Because of the change in pressure, you should not fly within about eighteen hours of the dive, so plan the session a day or more before your departure flight. Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.
