4.6 (8 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This shared afternoon snorkelling trip from Malé is for people who want more reef and more variety in a single outing. A speedboat with an on-board toilet collects you from your hotel in Malé or Hulhumalé for a half-past-one departure, and in about three hours you swim beside stingrays at a stingray point and snorkel three different coral reefs, including the Fish Tank site famous for its dense schools of reef fish. A snorkelling guide and trained crew look after the group, and snorkelling gear and mineral water are provided. Full Description
Malé and Hulhumalé: an afternoon start from the capital
This trip starts from the capital, so there is no resort transfer: we pick you up at your hotel in Malé or in Hulhumalé, the reclaimed island joined to it by the Sinamalé Bridge, up to thirty minutes before the half-past-one departure. The speedboat has an on-board toilet and shade, and the crew fits masks and snorkelling gear as you board. Anyone searching for a Hulhumalé snorkelling trip or a Malé afternoon excursion with pickup will find this the most straightforward option.
Kaafu Atoll, the ring of reefs around Malé, has many reef sites within a short ride, and the afternoon light slanting through the water gives the corals a different look from the morning. You are back at the jetty around three hours later and dropped at your hotel in time for dinner or an evening flight.
The stingray point: swimming beside stingrays
The first stop is a shallow sandy site where pink whiprays and cowtail stingrays gather over the bottom. Stingrays are flat relatives of sharks that spend their lives on sand, feeding on small crustaceans and worms; they are calm animals that only use the barb in their tail when stepped on or grabbed, which is why the rule is to float above them and never touch, chase or feed. From the surface you watch them glide, settle into the sand with a shiver and glide off again.
The guide enters the water first and shows the group where to float, and the crew keeps watch from the boat. Swimming with stingrays in the Maldives is safe when done this way and is often the moment children talk about afterwards. Allow around thirty minutes here before the speedboat moves to the first reef.
Fish Tank: the reef where the fish come to you
Fish Tank is a well-known snorkelling site near Hulhumalé where the water is thick with fish. Schools of snapper, fusiliers, batfish and trevally swirl around the snorkellers in such numbers that the name is no exaggeration; you can hang in one spot and the fish simply move around you. Stingrays and the occasional nurse shark cruise over the sand below, and the fish density makes it one of the most photogenic sites in the atoll.
The site is shallow and sheltered, which suits beginners, and the guide keeps the group together over the busiest patch of water. Fish are never fed by guests; you observe, the fish do the rest. Roughly thirty to forty minutes is spent at Fish Tank, usually the stop everyone remembers from a Malé snorkelling trip.
Two more coral reefs of Kaafu Atoll
The remaining two sites are coral reefs chosen by the crew for the day's conditions, typically a house reef with a steep drop-off and a shallow coral garden. On the drop-off you look down the reef wall into blue water, where parrotfish, surgeonfish, moorish idols and oriental sweetlips feed along the ledges and a turtle or a black-tip reef shark sometimes passes far below. On the coral garden the water is only a few metres deep and the view is all colour: table corals, staghorns, clownfish in anemones and clouds of blue chromis.
Visiting three different reefs in one afternoon shows how varied snorkelling in the Maldives is even within a short distance of Malé. The guide explains each site before you enter and points out what you are seeing; corals are never stood on or touched. The best time to visit Malé for snorkelling is the dry season from November to April, when visibility is greatest, but the trip runs all year with the sites adjusted to the sea.
Planning an afternoon snorkelling trip from Malé
Because this trip leaves at half past one, it pairs naturally with a morning Malé city tour or a late breakfast in Hulhumalé, and it suits travellers in transit who have a hotel near the airport. Meals and underwater photos are not included, so eat before pickup and bring a waterproof camera if you want pictures; mineral water is on board and the on-board toilet makes the three hours comfortable for families.
Children of all ages are welcome with an adult and a life jacket, and the child rate applies up to eight years. Sea conditions are checked before departure and the crew may change the order or choice of reef sites for safety; in rough weather the trip can be moved to another day. Bring a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen, because the afternoon sun on the water is strong.
