Full Description
Kanifinolhu island, North Malé Atoll
Kanifinolhu is a long, narrow resort island on the eastern side of North Malé Atoll in Kaafu, roughly thirty minutes by speedboat from Malé and the airport. It is among the larger islands near the capital, which gives it something small resort islands lack: distance. A sandy path runs its length under coconut palms, with the lagoon on one side, the ocean reef on the other and a wide beach at the tip where the two meet.
A resort day pass in the Maldives is the easiest way to see what the country is famous for while staying in Malé or Hulhumalé, and Kanifinolhu is a strong choice because it is set up for day visitors with activities as well as sunbeds. Guests who ask whether a day visit is worth it usually come back saying it was the best day of the trip: overwater jetties, white sand, a swimmable lagoon and a proper lunch, all in a single day with the transfer handled for you.
Beaches, the pool, snorkelling and paddleboarding
The island's beaches face two very different waters. The lagoon side is shallow, calm and pale turquoise, perfect for floating, for children and for a first go on a paddleboard, which is included as a non-motorised water sport along with snorkelling gear. The reef side has deeper water a short swim out, where the coral drops away and parrotfish, surgeonfish and sometimes a turtle or a small reef shark pass by; you watch, never touch.
Between the two sits the swimming pool with its loungers, which many day visitors treat as base camp. The pass includes access to the beaches and the pool, and the hosts run group activities and entertainment through the day, so you can join in or ignore them as you please. The spa and motorised water sports are available on the island but are not part of the pass and are paid separately.
Snacks and the international buffet lunch
Food is paced across the day. Morning snacks are served between 10:00 and 11:00, shortly after you arrive, the international buffet lunch runs from 12:00 to 14:00, and evening snacks appear between 16:00 and 17:00 before the boat back. The lunch buffet is the centrepiece: live cooking stations, salads, grilled fish and meat, pasta, rice dishes and Maldivian curries, with desserts and fruit to finish, served in an open-sided restaurant looking onto the sand.
The two-hour lunch window means you can eat early and go back to the lagoon, or take a long lunch in the shade. If anyone in your party has a dietary need, tell our team on WhatsApp when you book and we will pass it to the host so the kitchen can plan for it. The pass is counted per guest, and children use the same pass as adults on this product.
Getting to Kanifinolhu from Malé and Hulhumalé
How to get to Kanifinolhu is handled for you: the pass includes pickup from your hotel in Malé or Hulhumalé and a return speedboat transfer. Share your hotel name after booking, and the transfer details are confirmed by message. Our driver collects you for the 08:00 departure, and the speedboat takes about half an hour across the atoll, passing the airport island and the Sinamalé Bridge before the long green line of Kanifinolhu appears ahead.
The return boat leaves after the evening snacks, so you are back in the capital by early evening. For travellers looking for things to do in the Maldives on a budget from Malé or Hulhumalé, a day pass with the transfer and all meals included is far simpler than booking a resort night. The best time to visit is the dry season from December to April for the calmest crossing and the clearest lagoon, though the island is open and green all year. Bring your passport or ID for the resort check-in at the jetty.
