Full Description

Hukuru Miskiy, the Old Friday Mosque of Malé

The Old Friday Mosque, Hukuru Miskiy, is the oldest and finest building in the Maldives. Completed in 1658 under Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I, it is made of blocks of coral stone cut from the reef and fitted together without mortar, then carved with intricate geometric patterns and Quranic script. Inside, the lacquered wooden ceiling and panels are among the best examples of Maldivian woodwork, and the squat white minaret beside it dates from 1675. The mosque sits on the national tentative list of world heritage sites.

On this private Malé city tour your guide explains the carvings, the coral-stone technique and the mosque's place in the story of Islam in the islands, which arrived in 1153. Visitors view the mosque from the outside and the cemetery of carved coral tombstones around it; entering the prayer hall needs prior permission and modest dress. Allow about half an hour here, with the tomb of the Medhu Ziyaaraiy across the street.

The Islamic Centre and Grand Friday Mosque

A short distance away rises the Islamic Centre, officially the Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, opened in 1984 and named after the sultan who freed the Maldives from Portuguese rule in the sixteenth century. Its golden dome is the first thing you see arriving by sea, and the main prayer hall, one of the largest in South Asia, holds thousands of worshippers under carved wood and calligraphy. The complex also houses an Islamic library and a conference hall.

Your guide times the visit outside prayer hours so you can see the hall and the courtyard; shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes come off at the door. Together with the Old Friday Mosque it answers the question most visitors arrive with: what is there to see in Malé? These two mosques, side by side across three centuries, are the heart of any Malé sightseeing tour.

Sultan Park and the National Museum

Sultan Park occupies the grounds of the former Sultan's Palace, which was pulled down in 1968 when the Maldives became a republic. What survived is a shaded garden of old trees, ponds and iron gates in the middle of the city, a rare patch of green on an island where every square metre counts. Next to it stands the National Museum, whose galleries hold the sultans' thrones and ceremonial umbrellas, lacquer boxes, old Quran manuscripts and coral-stone Buddhist sculptures from the pre-Islamic era.

The museum has its own entry ticket, which is not included, and your guide can take you through it if you wish; it is closed on Fridays, so plan a weekday if the museum matters to you. Sultan Park itself is free and open daily, and it makes a cool pause between the mosques and the waterfront on a private Malé city tour.

Republic Square and the harbour front

Jumhooree Maidan, Republic Square, is the open space on the northern waterfront where the city breathes. The giant national flag flies above it, pigeons and families fill the paving in the evening, and the ferry jetties and the presidential jetty line the harbour wall. From here you look across the water to the airport island of Hulhulé and the Sinamalé Bridge that has linked Malé to Hulhumalé since 2018.

Your guide uses the square to explain how a nation of coral islands is run from one crowded island city: the police headquarters and government offices stand around it, the Islamic Centre's dome rises behind, and the ferries leave for every atoll. It is also the best place for a skyline photo. Republic Square is open at all hours, and in the late afternoon the light on the harbour is at its best.

The fish market and the local market

A few minutes' walk west along the waterfront brings you to the Malé fish market, where the dhoni fishing boats land their catch of skipjack and yellowfin tuna, and the fish are cleaned on the tiled floor in seconds by men who have done it all their lives. The best time to visit the fish market is the afternoon, when the boats come in, which is one reason the start time of this tour is flexible until six.

Beside it the local market sells what the atolls grow and make: bananas, papayas, breadfruit, coconuts, areca nut, dried fish, chilli pastes and bundles of pandan leaves. Your guide explains what each thing is and how it is used in a Maldivian kitchen. These two markets are where you meet the everyday Maldives, far from the resort islands, and they close the tour before we drop you back at your hotel.
