The airports serving Playa del Carmen

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the busiest airport of south-east Mexico, about 16 km south of downtown Cancun, 22 km from the Hotel Zone and 55 km from Playa del Carmen.

Tulum International Airport (TQO), opened in 2023 south of Tulum, is about 190 km north of Bacalar, around 2.5 hours by car on Highway 307, with domestic and international flights.

Playa del Carmen is the main Riviera Maya resort town, about 55 km south of Cancun Airport and 85 km north of Tulum Airport, with the Cozumel ferry pier, 5th Avenue and Playacar close together in the centre; Tulum is about 65 km south and Cancun Hotel Zone about 70 km north.

Intercity coaches run from the Cancun Airport terminals to Playa del Carmen in about an hour and suit a light backpack, but the bus station is in the town centre and resort zones such as Playacar, Mayakoba or Xpu-Ha need a taxi on top; a private car from the terminal is simpler for families, luggage and any hotel outside the walking centre.

Vehicles

Sedan for one to three passengers, minivan or GMC for up to seven, Sprinter for eight to thirteen; Mercedes, Volkswagen, Ford Transit and Peugeot Traveller models, air-conditioned, with proper luggage space. Child seats on request at no extra charge. The desk recommends the size once it knows how many of you there are and how many bags.

How the transfer works

You send the flight number, the date, the number of passengers and the hotel. The desk confirms the fixed price for the whole vehicle and the exact meeting point for the airport - it varies by terminal - with the driver's name and number. You choose flight tracking or a fixed pickup time, with up to 60 minutes of waiting included (90 at some airports). On the return, the driver collects you from the hotel with a margin for check-in.
