Full Description
Chichen Itza and El Castillo
Chichen Itza is the most visited Maya city in Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Maya built it as a political and religious centre, and its largest monument, El Castillo (the Temple of Kukulcan), is a stepped pyramid aligned with the sun: at the spring and autumn equinoxes, the shadow of a serpent appears along the staircase.
A Chichen Itza guided tour lets you see the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, the Platform of Skulls and the observatory known as El Caracol with expert explanation. The site visit lasts about two and a half hours. Climbing the pyramids is not allowed, and the best time to visit is early in the day when it is cooler and the plazas are less crowded.
Cenote Chichikan
Cenote Chichikan is a natural limestone sinkhole near Valladolid with clear, cool water, a good place to rest after walking in the sun. Entry is included in both options, and swimming is optional.
A life jacket and locker rental is mandatory and is paid separately. The stop of around two and a half hours also covers lunch in the default option and free time. Bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to swim in this Yucatán cenote. The cenote is also a good place to cool down before the drive to Valladolid, and the shaded area gives non-swimmers somewhere comfortable to wait.
Valladolid
Valladolid is a colonial town founded in the sixteenth century, known for its pastel façades, central plaza and the former convent of San Bernardino de Siena. It has a relaxed, local feel that contrasts with the resorts on the coast.
The tour includes a short panoramic visit of about 30 minutes, enough to walk the main square, take photos and look for souvenirs. If you love the town, we can suggest staying longer on another trip. Valladolid is also known for its cenotes and local cuisine, so many guests return later for a longer visit on their own.
Planning your Chichen Itza day trip
Many travellers search for a Chichen Itza day trip from Cancun and ask if it is worth it. The distance means a long day, with about an hour and a quarter of driving each way, but the transport is air-conditioned and your guide handles the logistics.
Bring a hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and your passport or ID. The Chichen Itza admission fee is not included, and is paid on site by card or as advised after booking. Opening hours and entry rules at the site can change by season. Because the site gets busy by late morning, an early start makes a real difference to your photographs.
