Full Description
Holbox Island and its sandy streets
Holbox (pronounced "hol-bosh") sits where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean, and it feels very different from the busy Riviera Maya. There are no cars on the island: people get around on foot, by bicycle or in golf carts, and the streets are made of soft sand, lined with colourful murals and small cafés. If you are wondering whether a Holbox day trip from Playa del Carmen is worth it, the answer is yes for anyone who wants a slower pace.
Our Holbox Island tour gives you about two hours of free time in town. Most guests walk to the beach, browse the craft shops and take photos of the street art. The water around Holbox is shallow and warm, and the best time to visit is generally the drier months from late autumn to spring, although conditions on the day can vary.
Isla Pasión sandbar and mangroves
Isla Pasión is a tiny island inside the protected Yum Balam area, reached by a short boat ride from the mainland side. It is made of pale sand and ringed by mangroves, and it is a good place for birdwatching: herons, pelicans and other water birds often rest here. The stop lasts around half an hour, enough to wade in the shallows and take pictures.
Because the lagoon is so shallow, the water takes on every shade of turquoise and the boat ride itself becomes part of the experience. Wildlife sightings depend on nature and cannot be promised, but the calm surroundings and open sky make this one of the prettiest moments of the day.
Yalahau cenote (Hoyo Negro)
Yalahau is a natural freshwater spring set in the mangrove edge of the Yucatán coast, locally known as Hoyo Negro. Cenotes are limestone sinkholes filled with groundwater, and this one offers a cool, clear swim after the warm sea air. The visit takes about an hour, so there is time to swim, float and rinse off the salt.
Bring swimwear, a towel and biodegradable sunscreen only, which protects the spring. Anyone planning a cenote swim near Holbox should also pack a change of clothes, because the rest of the day is spent outdoors.
Punta Mosquito and lunch by the water
Punta Mosquito is a long sandbar at the western end of the island, where the sea is calm and the horizon is wide. It is the lunch stop of the tour, and the break lasts around an hour and a half, including a short guided walk and free time on the sand.
This is a good place to watch birds and look for shells. Seaside lunches in Holbox are simple and local, and the time here gives the group a chance to rest before the return crossing. Weather and tides can affect the exact order of stops, but everything advertised stays in the programme.
