Full Description

The Majorelle Garden in the Gueliz district

The Majorelle Garden is a botanical garden in the Gueliz district of Marrakech, created by the French painter Jacques Majorelle from the 1920s. He designed its Cubist villa with the architect Paul Sinoir, painted it in the intense cobalt blue now known as Majorelle blue, and planted cacti, bamboo, palms and water lilies around fountains and a pond.

In 1980 Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought and restored the garden and opened it to visitors. People often ask whether the Majorelle Garden is worth visiting: for its colours, its shade and its calm in the middle of the city, yes. Allow about an hour for the garden if you want to take photographs and sit by the pond.

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum Marrakech

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum, opened in 2017, is a short walk from the garden. It celebrates the designer who loved Marrakech and spent part of each year here. The museum shows clothes, sketches, accessories and photographs, and its exhibitions change over time, so what you see depends on the season. The building itself, in a clay-coloured facade, is also worth a look.

If you search for how to visit the YSL Museum in Marrakech, this ticket solves it with one booking: you pass from the garden to the museum with the same combined entry. Opening days and hours change by season, so check your booking details for the latest information.

The Berber Museum inside the garden

The Berber Museum, also known as the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts, is in a building inside the Majorelle Garden, the former studio of the painter. Its collection comes from the Amazigh communities of Morocco, with silver jewellery, embroidered clothing, carpets, weapons and tools, and each object shows a different part of daily and ceremonial life.

The rooms are small and well lit, so you can see everything in about 30 minutes. For visitors who enjoy Moroccan culture, this museum gives meaning to what you see in the souks and on Atlas tours, and it is one of the most satisfying additions to the garden visit.

Planning your two-hour visit

Plan around two hours for all three sites, starting with the garden and ending with the YSL Museum, or in the order that suits your slot. The ticket gives access to the three places, and entry is by selected time slot, usually between about 09:30 and 12:00. Arrive early because peak season and weekends bring queues.

Gueliz has cafes and shops for lunch after your visit, and taxis take you to the medina and Jemaa el-Fna in a few minutes. The best time to visit the Majorelle Garden and museums is early morning, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons.
