Full Description

The Tizi n'Tichka Pass and Ait Benhaddou

The first day opens with the High Atlas. After hotel or riad pickup in Marrakech the van climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, one of the highest road crossings in Morocco at around 2,260 metres. The road passes villages, terraced fields and valleys that change colour from green to red as you head south, with plenty of viewpoints for photographs.

The main stop of the day is Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village of earthen towers and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands on the old caravan route to the Sahara. Many travellers ask if Ait Benhaddou is worth visiting on a Marrakech to Fes desert tour; it certainly is, as it is the best-preserved ksar in the region. A local guide inside the kasbah is paid on site and is not included in the tour.

Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Kelaat M'Gouna

After Ait Benhaddou the route passes Ouarzazate, a former kasbah town that serves as the gateway to the desert, and continues along the old road of many kasbahs. Around Kelaat M'Gouna the landscape is known as the Valley of Roses, where fields of damask roses bloom in spring and shops sell rose water and cosmetics all year.

You then continue into the Dades Valley, with its red cliffs, eroded rock formations and dramatic gorges. Your first night is in a hotel in the Kelaat M'Gouna or Dades area, depending on availability. With the luxury option you have an air-conditioned room with a private bathroom, while the standard option uses a hotel as well; dinner and breakfast are included in both. It is a restful stop after a long first day.

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi Dunes

Day 2 takes the road east through the Todra region, the palm groves and the desert plain to Merzouga, a small village at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the largest dune field in Morocco. The dunes rise to well over a hundred metres and glow orange at sunset. A camel waits to carry you into the sand for the sunset ride, a calm and unforgettable part of any Merzouga desert tour.

The camp stands among the dunes. In the standard option you sleep in a standard tent with a shared bathroom and toilet; in the luxury option you have a private tent with its own bathroom, shower and toilet and personal service. Dinner, Berber drumming and music around the fire, sandboarding on the slopes and a sunrise camel ride the next morning complete the stay. Plan on layers: nights in the desert can be cold.

The Ziz Valley, the Middle Atlas and Fes

On day 3 you leave Merzouga after breakfast and head north through the Ziz Valley, a long band of palm groves running beside a river canyon. The route continues to Midelt and climbs into the Middle Atlas, where the scenery shifts from desert to pine and cedar forest around Azrou and Ifrane, a mountain resort town with a very European look.

You arrive in Fes in the evening and are dropped at your hotel. This one-way route from Marrakech to Fes is a practical way to cross Morocco: instead of returning to Marrakech, the trip ends in the imperial city of Fes, ready for the old medina the next morning. The drive is long, so travellers who suffer from motion sickness should take precautions.
