Full Description
The Rembrandt House on Jodenbreestraat
The house at Jodenbreestraat 4 was built in 1606 and bought by Rembrandt in 1639, when he was already a famous painter. He lived here until 1658, when financial problems forced him to sell. The house was later turned into a museum, and its rooms were restored to look as they did in his day, using an inventory made at the time of his bankruptcy.
If you are asking how to get to the Rembrandt House Museum, take the metro to Waterlooplein or tram 14 to the same stop, and walk a couple of minutes. It sits in the old Jewish quarter, close to the Zuiderkerk and the Nieuwmarkt, and is easy to combine with a stroll along the canals.
The studio and the rooms where Rembrandt worked
Walking through the house you see the entrance hall where he received clients, the living room, the art room where he stored his collection of curiosities and the large studio on the upper floor with tall windows. It is one of the few places where you can stand in the light he used to paint.
The multimedia tour explains each room and tells stories about the household, including his wife Saskia, his son Titus and the pupils who worked beside him. If you are wondering how long to spend, allow around an hour and a half, more if you want to see the demonstrations.
Etchings, demonstrations and the master's technique
Rembrandt was one of the great printmakers, and the museum holds a nearly complete collection of his etchings. You see how he used a needle on a copper plate, and the daily etching and painting demonstrations show how the marks became an image.
Watching a demonstrator prepare pigments or print an etching is the closest you can get to looking over the master's shoulder. Ask for the time of the next demonstration when you arrive so you can plan your visit around it, and stand close enough to see the fine lines appear on the paper.
Planning your visit: families, exhibitions and access
There is a special multimedia tour for families with children, featuring Rembrandt's little dog Kwast and a treasure hunt. Temporary exhibitions in the modern wing show works by Rembrandt and by artists he inspired, and they are included in your entry.
The house has steep, narrow staircases, so it is not suitable for people with limited mobility or for wheelchair users. Your option includes the museum entry and the multimedia tour in English. Opening hours can change; check your date in the booking panel, and allow a little extra time if you want to see every room without hurrying.
