Full Description
The Hobbiton Movie Set in the Waikato
Hobbiton is the first main stop, on a family farm near Matamata about two hours from Auckland. A film village of round-door dwellings, flower gardens and a lakeside mill was built here and is open only on guided walks. Your specialist guide leads you through the site and tells behind-the-scenes stories about how it was created.
Entry and the fully guided tour are included, so there is no need to queue for tickets. Plan on about two and a half hours, with plenty of chances for photographs. Anyone searching for a Hobbiton and Rotorua day trip from Auckland will find this the simplest way to combine the two, in a small group instead of a large coach.
Wai-O-Tapu geothermal park
Wai-O-Tapu, whose name means sacred waters, is one of New Zealand's most colourful geothermal areas. Walking paths lead past bubbling mud, steaming craters, mineral terraces and pools in orange, yellow and green. The largest hot spring in the park is ringed with orange, and the bright green Devil's Bath is a highlight for photographers.
Entry to the park is included in your ticket, and the walk takes around one and a half hours. A sulphur smell hangs over the area, which is normal near geothermal features. Keep to the marked paths for safety. Best time to visit Wai-O-Tapu is on a clear day, when the colours are strongest, but the steam is dramatic on cool days too.
Rotorua and the road through Tīrau
Rotorua is a lakeside city on the volcanic plateau, known for its geothermal steam, Māori culture and outdoor activities. In the return option, a city highlights tour gives you an introduction to the main sights before the journey back. The one-way option ends here, which suits guests staying in Rotorua.
On the way you pass through Tīrau, a small town famous for its corrugated-iron sculptures, and travel the scenic road past forest and farmland. Your guide shares commentary on the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions, on Māori heritage and on local geology, making the long drive enjoyable.
Return or one-way: choosing your option
The default return option lasts about thirteen hours, returning to Auckland in the evening, with pickup from designated locations at around 6:00 AM. The one-way option lasts about nine hours and ends in Rotorua, and does not include the return transport to Auckland, so it suits guests who plan to stay there.
Both options include entry and a guided tour of Hobbiton, entry to Wai-O-Tapu, snacks and water, and a minibus with booster seats for children aged 7 and under on request. Lunch and other food and drinks are not included. Please tell us the ages of children on your booking. The tour is not recommended for people with limited mobility.
