Full Description

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Wai-O-Tapu, meaning sacred waters in Maori, is one of the best-known geothermal parks in New Zealand, around 30 minutes south of Rotorua. Its boiling mud, sulphur crystals and craters are painted in oranges, yellows and greens by the minerals in the hot water. Among its highlights are the Artist's Palette and the Devil's Bath, a lurid green pool, and the park also features the Lady Knox Geyser.

On this tour your guide points out what makes the colours and explains how the thermal system works, which helps if you are wondering whether Wai-O-Tapu is worth visiting. Check the inclusions in the booking panel for your entry arrangements, and note that opening hours change by season.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Waimangu is a valley created when Mount Tarawera erupted in 1886, which makes it one of the youngest geothermal ecosystems in the world. A walking track descends past steaming cliffs, bright green vegetation growing on warm ground, and crater lakes such as Inferno Crater Lake and the vast Frying Pan Lake, one of the largest hot springs anywhere.

The valley is quieter than the better-known parks, and its scenery of native bush, steaming water and blue-green lakes is superb for photography. Your Waimangu Thermal Valley admission is included, and the ticket queue is skipped, so more of your morning is spent on the path rather than in line.

Your driver-guide, commentary and audio guide

A driver and guide leads the group with live commentary in English, explaining the geology, the Maori history and the lives of the settlers who lived here before the eruption. An English audio guide gives you more detail as you walk, so you can go at your own pace.

Because Rotorua sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the commentary along the road, on the volcanic plateau and lakes, also makes the journey itself part of the experience. Ask questions freely, as the guide adapts the morning to the weather and the crowds.

Planning your morning: pickup, timing and what to bring

Hotel pickup is included from central Rotorua, and the tour runs from about 8 am to 1 pm, so you are back in time for lunch, which is not included. This answers how to get to Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu without a car: the transport is all arranged for you.

The best time to visit is in the morning, when steam is most visible and the air is cool. Wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers and bring water, sun protection and a camera. Both areas involve walking on uneven tracks and some slopes, so a moderate level of fitness is helpful.
