Full Description
Matka Canyon and Lake Matka
Matka Canyon lies about 15 km southwest of central Skopje, where the Treska River has cut a deep gorge through limestone mountains. In 1938 a dam was built at its mouth, creating Lake Matka, a narrow reservoir of green water squeezed between cliffs that rise hundreds of metres. The whole area is protected for its rare plants, butterflies and birds of prey, and it is the most popular escape from the city for Skopje residents.
On this Matka Canyon tour you have free time to enjoy it your way. You can sit by the water, follow the shaded path along the cliffs for the first views up the gorge, rent a kayak, or take the optional boat ride to Vrelo Cave. If you wonder whether Matka Canyon is worth visiting, the answer is the moment you see the emerald water against the grey rock. Spring and early autumn are the best time to visit Matka Canyon, with fewer crowds and mild temperatures.
Vrelo Cave and St. Andrew's Monastery
Vrelo Cave sits in the cliffs above Lake Matka and is reached only by boat, a scenic ride of roughly 20 minutes each way from the dam area. Inside are stalactites, a large chamber and an underground lake whose submerged shaft ranks among the deepest underwater caves in Europe; divers have explored it to more than 200 metres without reaching the bottom. The boat ride is optional and paid on site, and your guide helps you plan it within your free time.
Close to the dam stands the small Monastery of St. Andrew, built in 1389, with frescoes from the late 14th century that are still visible inside. Its stone walls, the bridge over the Treska and the cliffs behind make it one of the favourite photo spots in the canyon, and it is an easy first stop before you head to the water.
Vodno Mountain and the Millennium Cross
Vodno is the mountain that rises directly south of Skopje, and its summit, Krstovar, reaches 1,066 metres. On top stands the Millennium Cross, a 66-metre steel cross erected in 2002 to mark two thousand years of Christianity in the region. Lit at night, it is visible from almost everywhere in the capital, and the viewing area around it overlooks the Vardar valley, the city and, on clear days, the surrounding peaks.
The tour drives to Vodno for the views and the Millennium Cross area. A cable car runs from Sredno Vodno to the summit, and the ride is optional and paid on site; it closes from time to time for maintenance, and your guide confirms on the day whether it is running. Either way, the stop on Vodno Mountain gives you the best panorama of Skopje on the whole trip.
Gorno Nerezi and the Church of St. Panteleimon
On the slopes of Vodno sits the village of Gorno Nerezi and its Church of St. Panteleimon, built in 1164. The small Byzantine church, with its five domes and red brick walls, is famous among art historians for its frescoes. The Lamentation of Christ painted here shows grief and emotion with a realism that experts consider far ahead of its time, two centuries before similar styles appeared in Western Europe.
Entrance to the church is optional and paid on site, and a visit takes about 20 minutes. Outside, the terrace offers a lovely view down over Skopje, and the quiet setting among pine trees is a pleasant contrast to the busy city below. Please dress modestly if you go inside, with shoulders and knees covered.
The Macedonian Etno Village
Just below Gorno Nerezi, the Macedonian Etno Village recreates a traditional settlement with stone and timber houses, wooden balconies, cobbled lanes and a small church. It was built to show how villages in the Macedonian mountains once looked, and it is used today for events, traditional food and folk music. The setting on the hillside gives wide views over the capital.
During this stop your guide explains rural life, local crafts and customs, and you have time to look around the courtyards and take photos. It is a relaxed stop that pairs well with the church next door, and it gives a feeling for the countryside before the tour continues to Matka Canyon for the longest stop of the day.
