Full Description
Lake Ohrid
Lake Ohrid, shared between North Macedonia and Albania, is among the oldest lakes in Europe, with scientists estimating its age at more than one million years. It reaches a depth of almost 290 metres and is fed largely by underground springs, which keeps the water remarkably clear. Dozens of species live here and nowhere else, including the Ohrid trout, and in 1979 the lake and its shores became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Your free time is spent on the waterfront promenade near the harbour, where you can sit at a café, watch the fishing boats or take the optional boat ride for views of the old town from the water. If you are planning an Ohrid day trip from Skopje, the best time to visit Lake Ohrid is from May to October, when the water sparkles and the town is lively; spring and early autumn are calmer and still sunny.
Ohrid old town and Plaošnik
Ohrid was one of the great centres of Slavic culture in the Middle Ages, and its old town rises in terraces from the lake to the hilltop. With your local guide you follow cobbled lanes past white Ottoman-era houses with overhanging upper floors, the 11th-century Church of St. Sophia with its rare Byzantine frescoes, and small chapels tucked between gardens.
Halfway up the hill is Plaošnik, where St. Clement founded a monastery and school in 893 that helped spread the Cyrillic script; the rebuilt Church of St. Clement and St. Panteleimon stands beside early Christian mosaics. People often ask whether Ohrid is worth visiting on a day trip, and walking these lanes with a guide is the answer: in a few hours you see more than a thousand years of history in one compact old town.
The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid
The Ancient Theatre sits in a natural hollow between two hills in the upper old town. Built around 200 BC in the Hellenistic period, it was later adapted by the Romans for gladiator fights, which is why it was buried and forgotten for centuries. Excavations in the 1980s brought it back to light, and its stone seats now curve around a stage with the roofs of the old town and the lake behind.
Today the theatre is used again for concerts and plays during the Ohrid Summer Festival, held every July and August. Your guide explains its history and the life of ancient Lychnidos, as Ohrid was known in antiquity, and the stop is short and easy to combine with the climb to the fortress above.
Samuel's Fortress
Samuel's Fortress crowns the highest point of the old town and takes its name from Tsar Samuel, who ruled from Ohrid at the end of the 10th century and made it the capital of his state. The walls you see today follow the line of much older fortifications, and they stretch for about three kilometres around the hilltop, with towers and gates restored in recent years.
Walking along the ramparts gives one of the finest views over Lake Ohrid, the terracotta roofs and the mountains of Albania on the far shore. Entrance is not included and is paid on site, and the visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes: the paths up to the fortress are steep and paved with uneven stones.
Church of St. John at Kaneo
The small Church of St. John at Kaneo stands on a rocky cliff above the lake, below the old town, and it is the image that appears on almost every postcard of North Macedonia. Built in the 13th century, it combines Byzantine and Armenian architectural ideas, with a cross-shaped plan, a single dome and fragments of original frescoes inside.
The church takes its name from the old fishing settlement of Kaneo on the shore below. Your guide leads you to the viewpoint for the classic photo, best in late afternoon light, and you can step inside when it is open; entrance is paid on site. From here a path and wooden walkways lead back along the water towards the town centre, ending the guided visit by the lake.
