Full Description
The scenic drive from Bergen through Voss
The day begins with an early departure from Bergen and a drive east into the mountains, past fjord arms, lakes and the town of Voss. This part of the trip is more than transport: your driver-guide points out farms, waterfalls and the change from coastal to mountain scenery, and explains how the roads and tunnels have connected valleys that were once reached only by boat.
Because the drive is long, the tour makes short stops where you can buy coffee or a snack, as food is not included. Anyone searching for a Bergen to Flåm day trip will find this the easiest way to cover the distance in one day, since you do not have to check train and ferry timetables yourself and you return to Bergen the same evening.
The Viking Village at Gudvangen
Gudvangen sits at the head of the Nærøyfjord, and its Viking village is a recreated settlement built to show how people lived here a thousand years ago. Longhouses, wooden buildings and a guided visit explain Viking-age crafts, food, trade and stories, and there is plenty to photograph against the backdrop of the mountains.
Entry is included in our default option, so you can go straight in without queuing for a ticket. Many guests ask whether a Viking village tour is worth it on a fjord trip; the answer is yes if you enjoy history, because it gives the landscape a human story that a scenic cruise alone does not.
Nærøyfjord cruise
The Nærøyfjord is about 17 kilometres long and in places only a few hundred metres wide, with mountain walls rising straight from the water. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2005, together with the Geirangerfjord. During the cruise you pass tiny farms, thin waterfalls and quiet villages, and with luck you may see seals or sea eagles.
The boat has indoor seating and open deck space, so you can shelter from wind and rain or stand outside for photos. A Nærøyfjord cruise ticket is included in our default option, and the sailing takes you between Gudvangen and Flåm, two of the most visited villages on the fjord.
The Flåm Railway
The Flåm Railway runs for about 20 kilometres between Flåm and the mountain station of Myrdal, climbing roughly 860 metres through tunnels, bridges and steep slopes. It opened in 1940 and is often called one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The carriages have large windows, and there is usually a short stop by the Kjosfossen waterfall.
Flåm itself is a small village with a harbour, a railway museum and shops. Your guide will explain how the ride fits with the rest of the day, and the tour timings allow time to walk along the water. The Flåm train tickets are included in our default option, so nothing more needs to be booked.
