Full Description
Holmenkollen Ski Jump above Oslo
Holmenkollen is Norway's national ski centre, on a hill above the city, and its ski jump has been rebuilt many times since the first competitions in the 1890s. The current structure was completed for the 2011 World Championships and looks like a sleek white ski slope reaching out into the air, with the city and the fjord spread below.
The bus stops here for photographs, giving you the best views of the jump and the Oslo skyline. If you ask how to get to Holmenkollen Ski Jump on your own, it is reached by a metro line from the centre, but this tour gives you the stop as part of a wider circuit.
Vigeland Sculpture Park
Vigeland Sculpture Park lies inside Frogner Park and holds over 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland in granite, bronze and wrought iron. The figures show human life from childhood to old age, and the best-known works are the Monolith, a tall granite column carved with a tangle of human figures, and the little bronze Angry Boy.
Your guide leads a walk through the main alley, explaining what the sculptures mean and how Vigeland worked on the park for decades. The park is open to walkers, and the best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and there are fewer crowds.
The Fram Museum and the age of polar exploration
The Fram Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula is built around the polar ship Fram, which carried Fridtjof Nansen towards the North Pole in the 1890s and Roald Amundsen to Antarctica for his South Pole expedition in 1910 to 1912. You can walk on the deck and go below into the cabins, and exhibits explain life on the ice.
The museum is a favourite with families because you can explore the ship in person. Tickets are included in the tour, so you go straight in, and the guide gives context on Norwegian polar heroes. Allow time for the models, sledges and stories of survival on display.
The Folk Museum or Kon-Tiki Museum, and the fjord cruise
Also on Bygdøy, the Norwegian Folk Museum, included from May to September, is an open-air museum with historic buildings from across Norway, including a stave church from about the year 1200. From October to April the tour visits the Kon-Tiki Museum instead, which displays Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft from his 1947 Pacific expedition.
The tour ends with a sightseeing cruise on the Oslofjord, with views of islands, the city skyline and the waterfront. Lunch is not included, so plan to eat during a free moment, and bring a warm layer for the boat. The best time to visit Oslo is June to August for long days, though winter has its own appeal.
