Overview

This Lofoten RIB safari is a shared 2-hour speedboat trip from the central square of Svolvaer to Trollfjord, the narrowest and most dramatic fjord in the Lofoten and Vesteralen region of Norway. After a safety briefing you put on a warm flotation suit, gloves and goggles, then skim across clear water past bays with white sandy beaches and mountains that drop straight into the sea. The low, agile boat brings you close to white-tailed eagles hunting along the cliffs, with photo stops and stories from an English-speaking guide. It suits active couples, friends and families with children from 4 years. Full Description

Central Svolvaer and your safety briefing

The adventure begins at the activity office on the central square of Svolvaer, the busy harbour town on the island of Austvagoya that serves as the gateway to the Lofoten Islands. Fishing boats, drying racks for stockfish and the jagged ridge of Fløya with its famous Svolvaer Goat pinnacle form the backdrop as you arrive.

Inside the office the crew gives a clear safety briefing and fits you with a warm flotation suit, life vest, gloves and protective goggles. These suits keep you dry and cosy even when the air is cold and the spray flies, so you only need normal warm clothes underneath. Some personal items can be left at the office during the trip. Parking is not provided, so if you drive to Svolvaer, find a public car park in advance; most hotels in town are within a short walk.

Bays, beaches and mountains of the Lofoten coast

Once out of the harbour the RIB picks up speed and the coastline opens up. Lofoten is famous for granite peaks that rise straight from the sea, and from a low boat they look even taller. Between the headlands lie sheltered bays with water so clear you can see the seabed, and small beaches of pale, almost white sand that look more tropical than Arctic.

Your guide slows down at the most scenic points for photos and explains how glaciers carved these islands and how a warm Atlantic current keeps the sea open and ice-free all winter despite the northern latitude. Things to do in Lofoten often mean long drives, but this route shows a wide sweep of coastline in a short time, which makes it ideal if you have only a day or two in Svolvaer.

Sea eagle territory along the cliffs

The waters between Svolvaer and Trollfjord have one of the densest populations of white-tailed eagles in Europe. These huge birds, with a wingspan that can reach about 2.5 metres, nest on ledges and in trees along the steep cliffs and patrol the shoreline for fish. A sea eagle safari in Lofoten is the best way to see them in their natural habitat.

Because the RIB is small and quiet at low speed, the guide can bring you close to the shore while keeping a respectful distance. You often see adults with their white tails and yellow beaks, and darker young birds learning to hunt. Keep your camera ready: eagles can swoop down to the water right beside the boat. Gulls, cormorants and sometimes seals add to the wildlife on this stretch.

Raftsundet and the walls of Trollfjord

The route continues into Raftsundet, the narrow strait between Austvagoya and Hinnoya, where birch-covered slopes and small farms line the water. Near its northern part a gap in the mountains reveals Trollfjord, about 2 kilometres long and only some 100 metres wide at the entrance, with peaks rising to roughly 1,000 metres on both sides.

Entering the fjord in a RIB is unforgettable: the walls feel close enough to touch, waterfalls spill down the rock and the echo of the engine fades as the boat drifts. Your guide tells the story of the Battle of Trollfjord in 1890, when local fishermen in open boats stood up to steamship owners for the right to fish here. Trollfjord from Svolvaer has no road access, so a boat trip like this is the way to reach it.

The RIB experience and photo stops

A rigid inflatable boat combines a solid hull with air-filled tubes, giving stability and excellent manoeuvrability. That means quick crossings between highlights and the freedom to slip into small bays that larger boats cannot reach. The ride is exhilarating but not extreme, and the guide adjusts speed to the group and to sea conditions.

Several stops are made along the way for photos and short talks about nature and history, so the trip feels like a guided safari rather than a race. With departures at 10:30, 13:00 and 15:30, it is easy to fit around other plans, and the same safari is also offered as a single midday departure option on this page. Is a Lofoten RIB tour worth it? For many travellers it is the most exciting two hours of their stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is a shared RIB safari with other travellers and an English-speaking guide. There are two options on this page: the safari with a choice of three daily departures, and the same safari on a single midday schedule.

How long does the RIB safari take?

About 2 hours from check-in to return, including the safety briefing, the ride to Trollfjord, eagle viewing and photo stops.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet at the activity office on the central square of Svolvaer, a short walk from most hotels in town.

What is included?

The RIB ride from Svolvaer to Trollfjord, an English-speaking guide, the safety briefing, a warm flotation suit, life vest, gloves and protective goggles, plus sea eagle viewing and photo stops.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with adult and child categories. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is it suitable for children and travellers with reduced mobility?

Children from 4 years can join with an adult. The safari is not suitable for pregnant women or wheelchair users, and the boat can bounce on waves.

Will I get wet or cold?

The flotation suit, gloves and goggles keep you warm and dry. Wear warm layers underneath and bring a hat for the wind.

Will we see sea eagles?

The area has one of the largest sea eagle populations in Europe and sightings are very common, but wildlife can never be guaranteed.

What is the best time of day or season?

All three departures offer good light. Summer brings long bright days, while spring and autumn add snow on the peaks and softer colours.

What happens in bad weather?

The crew may change the route or cancel for safety. If the trip is cancelled because of weather, you receive a full refund or we help you rebook.

How is a RIB safari different from a big-boat cruise?

The RIB is faster, lower and more agile, so you get closer to cliffs and eagles and feel the sea more. A larger boat offers indoor lounges and a calmer ride.

How do I book and confirm?

Pick your date and departure time in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes, with all meeting details.
