Full Description
Chagres National Park: the rainforest behind the canal
Chagres National Park was created in 1984 to protect the forests around the upper Chagres River, whose water fills Lake Alajuela and helps to supply both the Panama Canal and the drinking water of Panama City and Colon. Covering about 129,000 hectares of hills and tropical rainforest, it shelters howler monkeys, toucans, sloths, tapirs and hundreds of bird species, yet it lies only about an hour and a half by road from the skyscrapers of the capital.
How to get to the Embera village? There is no road: communities in the park are reached by canoe from a small river landing, which is why an organised Embera village day trip from Panama City with transport is the easiest way to go. Our shared minibus collects you at your hotel and drives north through the suburbs and countryside to the riverbank, where the canoes wait.
By dugout canoe on the Chagres River
At the landing you climb into a long piragua, a canoe carved from a single tree trunk and fitted with an outboard motor, steered by Embera boatmen who know every bend and sandbank of the river. The ride upstream lasts around 30 to 40 minutes, gliding between walls of green forest where herons, kingfishers and egrets fish along the banks and, with luck, a monkey or an iguana appears in the trees.
The level of the river changes with the seasons. In the dry season, from about December to April, the water is lower and clearer and the boatmen sometimes step out to push the canoe over the shallows. In the rainy season, from May to November, the river is fuller, the forest is at its greenest and the trip feels even wilder. Either way, sit back, keep your camera ready and enjoy the journey.
The jungle waterfall
On the default option the canoe stops along the way so you can follow a short forest trail of about 15 to 20 minutes to a waterfall that drops into a clear natural pool. The path crosses streams and roots and can be muddy, so good sandals or shoes with grip help. At the falls there is time to swim in the cool fresh water, stand under the spray and take photos surrounded by giant leaves and tropical flowers.
The waterfall is strongest in the rainy season and gentler in the dry months, but it is beautiful all year. This stop runs on a fixed schedule so that the group reaches the village in time for lunch, and it is the reason the default tour lasts about seven hours. If you prefer a shorter day, the option without the waterfall goes straight to the community.
The Embera community and its culture
The Embera are one of the seven indigenous peoples of Panama, traditionally living along the rivers of the Darien forest; several families settled on the Chagres River in the last century. On arrival you are welcomed with music of flutes and drums and shown around the village of open-sided stilt houses with thatched palm roofs, built high to stay cool and dry. A community member explains their history, their language, their medicinal plants and how they combine forest traditions with modern life.
Is the Embera village worth visiting? For many travellers it is the most memorable day in Panama, because it is a real community that has chosen to share its culture on its own terms. You see traditional dances, the colourful skirts and beaded necklaces worn for celebrations, and you are free to ask questions. Please ask before taking close-up photos of people.
Lunch, crafts and jagua body painting
Lunch is served in the village and is cooked by the community: fried tilapia fish and chicken, with white cheese for vegetarians, patacones, which are crispy smashed green plantains, boiled yucca and sweet ripe plantains, followed by a bowl of seven seasonal tropical fruits such as pineapple, papaya, watermelon and banana. Bottled water and soft drinks are included.
Afterwards you can try jagua painting, a traditional dark-blue body paint made from the fruit of the jagua tree that the Embera use for protection and celebration; it fades naturally after about one to two weeks. Before you leave, the artisans display finely woven baskets and masks made from palm fibre, along with carvings in tagua nut and cocobolo wood. Buying directly supports the families, so bring some cash.

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
The default option is a shared group tour with other travellers, with a shared minibus, a shared canoe and an English-speaking guide.
How long does it take?
The default tour with the waterfall lasts about 7 hours including transfers. The option without the waterfall lasts about 5 hours.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel or address in Panama City are included.
What is included?
Hotel transfers, the shared minibus, the canoe ride on the Chagres River, the waterfall visit, an English-speaking guide, lunch with seasonal fruit, bottled water, soft drinks and traditional body painting. The community and national park fees are paid in cash on the day.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a reduced rate for children aged 6 to 11. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children are very welcome and usually love the canoe and the village. The waterfall trail is uneven and the canoe requires stepping in and out, so travellers with reduced mobility may prefer the option without the waterfall and should contact us first.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, shoes with grip, a waterproof bag and some cash for the park fee and crafts.
What is the best time to visit the Embera village?
The tour runs all year. The dry season from December to April brings sunny days and clear water, while the rainy season from May to November makes the forest greener and the waterfall stronger, with showers usually in the afternoon.
What happens in bad weather?
Light tropical rain does not stop the tour, and ponchos or a light rain jacket are useful. If heavy rain makes the river or trail unsafe, the guide may adjust the visit or we offer another date.
Is the Embera village a real community?
Yes. Families live in the village, fish, farm and go to school, and they welcome visitors to share their culture and earn income from tourism and crafts.
Is there a vegetarian lunch?
Yes. Vegetarians receive white cheese with patacones, yucca, plantains and fruit instead of fish or chicken; just tell us when booking.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option and date in the booking panel on this page. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your pickup details.
