Full Description
The Royal Way and the Long Market
The Royal Way is the historic route through the Main Town of Gdansk, traditionally followed by visiting monarchs. It passes through the Golden Gate and along the Long Market, the broad street lined with tall, narrow merchant houses with painted and carved facades, and ends at the Green Gate on the riverfront. It is the heart of any Gdansk city tour and the place where the city's wealthy past is most visible.
At the centre stands Neptune's Fountain, the bronze sea god that has become the city's emblem, close to the Artus Court, the old merchants' meeting hall, and the Main Town Hall with its tall tower. On the golf cart you cover this whole stretch in comfort and your guide stops at the best places for photographs, explaining the symbols on the facades and the legends of the old merchants.
St Mary's Church and Mariacka Street
St Mary's Church is a huge brick Gothic church, built over more than a century and among the largest brick churches in the world, with a tall tower and a vast interior that holds thousands of people. Its plain exterior contrasts with the colourful houses around it. Visitors who wish to climb the tower for the view can do so after the tour, since the golf cart brings you right to the doors.
Just behind it runs Mariacka Street, the most atmospheric lane in Gdansk, paved with cobbles, with raised stone terraces in front of each house and decorative gargoyle drainpipes. Gdansk is known as the amber capital of the world, and the street is lined with amber jewellery workshops and galleries. Your guide explains how amber is formed, how to tell the real stone from imitations and why the trade shaped the city.
The Motława riverfront and the Crane
The Motława is the river that made Gdansk a Hanseatic trading harbour, and its embankment is among the liveliest parts of the city, with old granaries, boats and restaurants. The medieval Crane, a huge wooden harbour crane with two towers, is the symbol of the waterfront. It once lifted cargo and masts, and it now houses part of the maritime museum. The view across the water is a classic photograph.
On the opposite bank lies Granary Island, once crowded with the warehouses that stored grain for export. Much of it was destroyed in the war and is now rebuilt as a modern district of apartments and cafés. The cart follows the quay at an easy pace, so you can enjoy the river view, the passing boats and the reflections of the old buildings without any effort.
Gdansk history from the Hanseatic League to Solidarity
Gdansk has a long and dramatic history. It was a powerful Hanseatic trading city, then a free city, and later the place where the first shots of the Second World War were fired in 1939. After the war, the city was almost completely destroyed and then carefully rebuilt in the old style. Today's Main Town is an accurate reconstruction, which your guide describes with pride.
In the twentieth century, the shipyard of Gdansk became the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, which helped bring change across Central Europe. Your guide can include this story in the commentary, and if your time allows, can point out the shipyard area. The tour is a good overview for anyone who wants to understand the city's past before exploring its museums in more detail on foot.
The golf cart experience: private, heated and flexible
The electric golf cart is small, quiet and open to views, with a cover and side protection against wind and rain and a heated interior for cold days. It stops easily at photo points and handles the narrow streets of the old town better than a coach. There are no engine noises or fumes, so you can hear the guide clearly, and the multi-language audio guide is available as an extra for those who want to listen in another language.
Choose the two-hour tour for a relaxed pace, with time for photographs and questions, or the one-hour private option for a shorter introduction. Both include hotel pickup. Tell us the size of your party and the age of any children when you book so that we confirm the right arrangement. Children are welcome and pay the same price as adults in the booking panel.
