Full Description

Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains

Zakopane sits at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, about 100 kilometres south of Krakow, and is known across Poland as the country's winter capital. The Tatras are the highest range of the Carpathians, and from the town you see the jagged ridge of Giewont, whose outline is said to resemble a sleeping knight. Zakopane is also the heartland of the Górale highlanders, with their own dialect, music and carved wooden architecture.

The drive from Krakow takes about 2 hours through the rolling hills of the Podhale region. Many travellers ask how to get to Zakopane from Krakow without renting a car; this Zakopane tour solves it with transport there and back. The best time to visit Zakopane for snow is from December to March, while the rest of the year the same trails are explored by quad.

Snowmobile safari on the mountain trails

The adventure begins at a base in the foothills near Zakopane. A certified instructor gives a clear safety briefing and hands out helmets, balaclavas and gloves, then leads the group in a line of snowmobiles along forest tracks and open meadows with views of the Tatra peaks. The guided ride lasts about an hour and is beginner-friendly: you follow the instructor at a steady pace, with photo stops along the way.

Each snowmobile carries up to two people, so friends and couples can share and swap drivers. The vehicle rental is paid in cash on site, one vehicle for up to two riders, so bring local currency. If the snow cover is too thin, the ride is replaced by a quad ride on the same mountain trails, and we let you know before the day.

Highlander bonfire and smoked oscypek cheese

After the ride, everyone gathers around a traditional highlander bonfire. Sausages are grilled over the fire, hot drinks are served to warm you up, and you taste oscypek, the smoked sheep's cheese of the Tatra region. Oscypek is pressed into carved wooden moulds that give it its decorative patterns, then smoked for several days; it has protected status in the European Union and is often served warm with cranberry jam.

The bonfire is a relaxed moment to rest, share stories and take photos against the mountain backdrop. It also gives a taste of Górale hospitality, which is central to life in Podhale. Lunch is not included, but there is time to buy food during the day, and the bonfire snacks keep you going until the thermal baths.

The Chochołów thermal baths

The day ends in Chochołów, a village close to the Slovak border famous for its long row of wooden highlander houses built from thick timber logs. Here, geothermal water rises from deep below the Podhale basin and fills indoor and outdoor pools heated to between 29 and 38 °C. Fast-track entry gives you three hours to move between the pools, whirlpools and a relaxation zone.

Soaking in a steaming outdoor pool while snow lies on the surrounding fields and the Tatras glow in the late afternoon light is the highlight of the day for many guests. Bring swimwear, a towel and flip-flops, as these are not included. After the baths, the vehicle returns to Krakow and drops you at Floriana Straszewskiego 17, close to the Old Town, after about 10 hours in total.
