Full Description

The palace and the chapel of Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira was created in the early 20th century, when a wealthy collector bought an old estate on the edge of Sintra and commissioned a set designer to build a dream world of stone. The result is a five-storey palace in neo-Manueline style, covered with carved gargoyles, pinnacles and stone lacework, and an elegant chapel of the Holy Trinity decorated with mosaics, stained glass and religious symbols.

Inside the palace, rooms such as the hunting room and the library keep their carved ceilings, fireplaces and tiled floors, and the windows frame views of the gardens and the Sintra Hills. The estate is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, listed by UNESCO in 1995. Many visitors ask whether Quinta da Regaleira is worth visiting next to the palaces of Sintra; for its atmosphere and its gardens, it is often their favourite.

The Initiation Well and the underground tunnels

The most famous sight in the estate is the Initiation Well, an inverted tower that plunges about 27 metres into the ground. A spiral stone staircase winds down its walls, with nine landings that are said to symbolise stages of a spiritual journey, while light falls from the opening above onto a compass-rose emblem at the bottom. Walking down it is one of the most photographed experiences in Portugal.

From the bottom, dark tunnels lead through the rock to grottoes and to the Lake of the Waterfall, where you cross the water on stepping stones. A second, smaller well, known as the Unfinished Well, has a staircase of separate stone flights. The tunnels are narrow and dim, so a phone light helps; queues for the well form at midday, so go early in your visit.

The gardens, fountains, aquarium and greenhouse

The gardens climb the hillside in terraces linked by paths, steps and secret passages, planted with tall trees, ferns and flowers that keep the estate green and cool all year. Along the way you discover the Fountain of Abundance, guardian towers, stone benches, a lion sculpture, the Regaleira tower with its views over the town, and grottoes decorated with shells and rocks.

Look out also for the small aquarium and the greenhouse, both restored, and the many symbols hidden in the stonework, from mythological figures to alchemical signs. The smartphone audio tour explains these details and the ideas behind the design, so you understand why the estate is called a garden of mysteries. Plan at least an hour in the gardens alone, as it is easy to lose track of time.

Planning your visit to Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira opening hours generally run daily from about 9:30 to early evening, later in summer, with last entry 90 minutes before closing. The best time to visit Quinta da Regaleira is right at opening or later in the afternoon, when the well is less crowded. Your Quinta da Regaleira tickets are for a fixed time slot; if your slot is full, the team may move your entry slightly earlier or later.

The estate lies about ten minutes' walk west of Sintra's old town on the road towards Seteais, and the hop-on bus from the station passes nearby. From Lisbon, the train to Sintra takes about 40 minutes. Wear shoes with grip, as paths and tunnels can be damp and slippery, and combine the visit with the National Palace in the old town on the same day.
