Private Electric Buggy Tour of La Digue with Guide

Overview

This private La Digue electric buggy tour puts the island's most beautiful corners within easy reach, without pedalling in the heat. For about seven hours you ride in your own electric buggy with a local driver-guide speaking English or French, and the route is built around you: Anse Source d'Argent and L'Union Estate, Grand Anse on the east coast, the calm coves of the north and the viewpoints between them, with swimming and photo stops whenever you like. We pick you up at your hotel or the La Digue jetty and bring you back. The buggy carries only your party, so the pace and every beach break are yours to decide; a four-hour private option also exists. Ideal for families, couples and friends who want La Digue without a bicycle.

  • Hotel or jetty pickup and drop-off on La Digue included

Full Description

La Passe and the car-free rhythm of La Digue

La Digue is the small granite island east of Praslin where bicycles, ox carts and a handful of electric vehicles replace ordinary traffic. Life centres on La Passe, the village around the jetty, with its shops, small restaurants and church. How to get to La Digue is simple: a ferry of about fifteen minutes from Praslin, or a longer crossing from Mahe with a change at Praslin, and both arrive at the La Passe jetty, one of the two pickup points for this tour.

An electric buggy is the comfortable way to see the whole island in a day. The roads are narrow and mostly flat near the coast but climb steeply inland, and a bicycle in the midday heat tires out children and parents alike. Our driver-guide meets you at your hotel or at the jetty up to fifteen minutes before the start, agrees the plan with you before setting off.

Anse Source d'Argent and L'Union Estate

Anse Source d'Argent is the beach that made La Digue famous: a chain of small white-sand coves divided by enormous pink-tinged granite boulders, with a shallow turquoise lagoon protected by the reef. The only access is through L'Union Estate, an old coconut and vanilla plantation with an ox-driven copra mill, a colonial plantation house, vanilla vines and a giant tortoise enclosure, a short walk from the buggy. The entrance fee to L'Union Estate is not included and is paid at the gate.

Is Anse Source d'Argent worth visiting? Yes, and the tide decides how you enjoy it. At low tide the lagoon is a knee-deep pool for walking between the boulders and photos; around mid tide there is enough water to swim. On a private tour we time the visit around the tide, and most guests spend between one and two hours here, the longest stop of the day. L'Union Estate opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon.

Grand Anse, Petite Anse and the east coast

The road across the island to Grand Anse passes through the Veuve Reserve, the small forest reserve protecting the Seychelles paradise flycatcher, a rare bird with long black tail feathers that your guide may spot in the takamaka trees. Grand Anse La Digue is the largest beach on the island, a wide curve of white sand facing the open Indian Ocean with powerful waves, coconut palms and granite headlands at each end. It is dramatic and often empty, but the currents are strong and swimming is unsafe most of the year.

From the end of the road a path of about fifteen minutes over the headland leads to Petite Anse, a smaller and even quieter bay, and keen walkers can continue to Anse Cocos, where rocks form a calm natural pool. The buggy waits while you explore, and your guide suggests how far to go in the heat. Allow around an hour for the east coast, more if you walk to Anse Cocos.

Anse Sévère, Anse Patates and the north coast

North of La Passe the coast road hugs a string of calm, shallow coves, ideal for a swim after the surf of the east. Anse Sévère is a long, sheltered beach with shade trees and easy snorkelling just off the sand, with parrotfish in clear water. Bring your own mask and snorkel, as beach equipment is not included. A little further, Anse Patates is a tiny cove at the northern tip of the island, framed by granite, with Praslin across the channel.

The north coast is also the sunset side of La Digue, a natural finish for the afternoon half-day option. Further east, Anse Gaulettes and Anse Banane are quieter still, with rock pools at low tide. Your driver-guide knows which cove is calmest on the day, so you swim where the water is best, not where the crowd is.

Viewpoints, villages and the private pace of the day

Between the beaches the buggy climbs to viewpoints over La Passe, the reef and the outline of Praslin, and rolls through small settlements where families keep gardens of breadfruit, papaya and vanilla. These are the moments when a local guide makes the difference: the stories of the plantations, the giant tortoises on some properties, and the photo spot no map shows. If you want a lunch stop, your guide recommends a local restaurant on the way; food and drinks are not included.

Because this is a private La Digue tour, the full-day programme is only a suggestion. Families often ask for two swims and a long break at Anse Source d'Argent, couples for the quiet coves of the north, photographers for the best light. The best time to visit La Digue is October to April, when the sea is calmest and the lagoon at Anse Source d'Argent is glassy; May to September is cooler and breezier, with bigger surf on the east coast.

The buggy is reserved for your group. Tell us the number of adults and children when you book and we confirm the right vehicle for your party.

Is the price per person or per group?

Both private options are priced per group, not per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your dates.
