Full Description
Eden Island and Victoria, where your first dive begins
The session starts at the dive centre on Eden Island, a marina island linked by a short bridge to the east coast of Mahe just south of Victoria, the small capital of the Seychelles. Eden Island has a sheltered marina, restaurants, shops and calm water, which makes it a practical base for beginners. How to get to Eden Island: it is about five to ten minutes by taxi from the centre of Victoria, around fifteen minutes from the airport and a short drive from the hotels of the east coast; from Beau Vallon on the north coast allow about half an hour over the hill. Transport is not included.
Because you meet at 14:00, the morning is free for Victoria: the clock tower, the colourful Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market and the botanical garden are all close by. Arrive at the dive centre a little early so there is time to complete the short medical statement and paperwork before the briefing starts.
The try-dive step by step: briefing, shallow water, reef
Your instructor begins with a short theory session on dry land: how the equipment works, how pressure changes affect your ears and how to equalise, the hand signals you will use underwater and the simple rules that keep every dive safe. You are then fitted with a wetsuit, mask, fins, tank, weights and regulator, all included, and walk into calm, shallow water. Here you take your first breaths underwater, standing, then kneeling, until the sensation of breathing through a regulator feels normal; most people find this takes only a few minutes.
When you are comfortable, the dive proper begins over coral reef at beginner depth, with the instructor holding or shadowing you at all times and adjusting the pace to how you feel. Tropical fish come close, the colours are brighter than any photo and the silence is the part most first-timers remember. The whole session, from welcome to rinsing the gear, takes about three hours.
The reefs of Mahe and the Sainte Anne Marine Park
Mahe's east coast is one of the best places in the Indian Ocean for a first dive. Just offshore from Victoria and Eden Island lies the Sainte Anne Marine Park, the oldest marine park in the region, where the islands of Sainte Anne, Cerf, Moyenne, Round and Long shelter seagrass meadows and coral gardens in calm, protected water. The granite islands of the Seychelles create a seascape of boulders, coral-encrusted slopes and sand patches that beginners can explore at shallow depth with good visibility.
Expect parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish and shoals of fusiliers, and sometimes a hawksbill turtle grazing or an eagle ray gliding past. The dive site for your session is chosen by the instructor on the day according to the sea conditions and the group, always with beginners in mind. Touching coral or marine life is not allowed; you look, float and let the reef come to you, which is also why your booking contributes to a local reef conservation project.
Practical advice and the best time to dive in Seychelles
Bring swimwear for under the wetsuit, a towel, sunscreen and water; food and drinks are not included. You should be in good general health, comfortable in the water and able to swim at a basic level; a short medical statement is completed before the dive, and anyone with a condition affecting diving may be asked for a doctor's clearance. Do not dive under the influence of any substance, and do not plan a flight for at least twelve hours after the dive. The session is for adults only and not suitable for pregnant women.
The best time to dive in Seychelles is the calm, clear water of April to May and October to November, between the two trade-wind seasons, though diving on the sheltered east coast of Mahe is possible all year. The water stays warm all year, so the included wetsuit is light. If you fall in love with it, this discover scuba diving session can be the first step toward a full beginner course.
