Full Description
Victoria and its market
A private tour of Mahe naturally starts in Victoria, the small capital on the east coast. The clock tower at the central crossroads, the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market with its fish, fruit and spice stalls, the colourful Hindu temple and the cathedrals are all within a few hundred metres of each other, so a stop of about an hour covers the essentials. The market is at its liveliest on weekday mornings and on Saturday, which is one reason the full-day tour begins here.
On the edge of town, the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens are a quiet half-hour among coco de mer palms, orchids, fruit bats and a group of giant Aldabra tortoises; the entry fee is paid locally. On the half-day option Victoria is usually kept short so that there is time for a viewpoint and a beach, while on the full day you can linger and add the National Museum of History if it interests you.
Mountain viewpoints and the tea plantation
From Victoria the Sans Souci road climbs into Morne Seychellois National Park, the protected forest that covers the mountainous spine of Mahe. The Mission Lodge viewpoint, with its ruins of a school for liberated slave children and a sweeping view over the west coast, is the stop everyone asks for, and further along the ridge the tea plantation area produces the island's own tea on hillsides above the sea. The road itself is a highlight: hairpin bends, giant ferns, cinnamon trees and sudden views of the islands.
The crossing is included in both versions of the tour, and it is the best way to see the flora of Mahe without a long hike. If you are wondering whether Morne Seychellois National Park is worth visiting on a day trip, this drive answers it in about an hour, with our driver stopping wherever the light is good for photos.
The north coast: Beau Vallon and Bel Ombre
Beau Vallon is Mahe's main beach, a long curve of sand on the north-west coast with gentle water for swimming, a view of Silhouette Island and a relaxed village behind it. On a private Mahe tour it is often the first or the last beach of the day, and on the half-day option starting at 13:00 it is a natural end point for the sunset. Next to it, Bel Ombre is a quieter stretch with granite boulders and fishing boats.
This coast is also the most convenient for a lunch stop on the full-day tour: our driver recommends a local restaurant where you pay directly, and the pause can be as long or as short as you like. From here the road loops around the north tip of the island past Glacis and North East Point, a scenic stretch with small coves on the way back towards the east coast.
The east coast: Anse Royale and the spice gardens
South of the airport the east-coast road runs through fishing villages to Anse Royale, a long reef-protected beach with a small islet just offshore and good shallow snorkelling. The water is calm for most of the year, and the beach has shade and a few places for a drink. In the hills behind it, the Le Jardin du Roi spice garden grows cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and pepper on an old plantation, and the Domaine de Val des Prés craft village shows Creole architecture and local handicrafts; entry fees to these cultural sites are paid locally.
This is where the full-day tour differs most from the half day: there is time to combine a swim at Anse Royale with a cultural stop, and to continue south without hurrying. Most guests reach the east coast in the early afternoon after lunch.
The south coast: Anse Intendance and Anse Takamaka
The far south of Mahe is wilder and emptier. Anse Intendance is a wide, open beach with big surf and granite headlands that is one of the most dramatic places on the island, and a few minutes away Anse Takamaka is a calmer curve of sand between boulders where swimming is usually easier. From here the west-coast road returns north past Anse à la Mouche, Anse Boileau and Port Glaud, with more viewpoints over the bays, back to your hotel.
These beaches take about forty-five minutes to reach from Victoria, so they belong to the full-day tour; on the half-day version our driver suggests beaches closer to your hotel instead. Surf at Intendance is strongest from May to October, when it is a place to watch rather than swim, and the calm season from November to April is the best time to visit the south of Mahe for the water.
