Full Description
King's Parade, the heart of historic Cambridge
King's Parade is the most famous street in Cambridge, a wide, gently curving road lined on one side by small shops and cafés in old townhouses and on the other by the long stone screen and gatehouse of King's College. It has been the main route through the university quarter for centuries, and today it is the natural starting point for any Cambridge University tour.
Your guide meets you here and introduces the city: how a small market town on the River Cam became one of the world's great universities, how the colleges grew one by one from the thirteenth century onwards, and how students and townspeople have lived side by side ever since. Look out for the golden grasshopper clock on the corner of a college library, a modern landmark that delights visitors.
The Senate House and the university church
Just off King's Parade stands the Senate House, an elegant classical building of white stone completed in the eighteenth century. It is used for the university's most important ceremonies, above all graduation, when students in gowns and hoods are presented one by one to receive their degrees. Your guide explains the colourful rituals that still take place inside.
Opposite rises the university church, whose tower has marked the centre of Cambridge since the Middle Ages. Its bells have rung over the city for centuries, and traditionally students had to live within a set distance of it. Visitors can climb the tower for views over the colleges on another occasion; on this tour, your guide focuses on its role in university life.
Trinity, Corpus Christi and the college system
Walking through the centre, you see the outside of some of Cambridge's most famous colleges. Trinity College, founded in the sixteenth century, is the largest and wealthiest, with a grand gatehouse and the biggest enclosed court in the city. Corpus Christi College, founded by two town guilds in the fourteenth century, has the oldest surviving court in Cambridge, with its medieval walls still standing.
Along the way, your student guide explains how the college system works: each college has its own dining hall, chapel, library and traditions, and students live, eat and study within their college while attending lectures at the university. You also hear funny stories about formal dinners, rowing races, exam customs and pranks, giving a real insight into life behind the college gates.
King's College and its lawns
Your ticket includes entry to King's College, founded in 1441 and one of the most beautiful colleges in Cambridge. Passing through the gatehouse, you step into the great front court with its manicured lawn, ringed by elegant buildings and dominated by the chapel. Beyond, the college grounds sweep down to the River Cam, where punts glide past and the famous view across The Backs opens up.
Your guide shares the story of the college's founding, its connection with a school of the same name, and its world-famous choir, whose carol service on Christmas Eve is broadcast around the world each year. Many visitors say this is the moment when they really understand why Cambridge is called one of the most beautiful university cities on earth.
King's College Chapel: the fan-vaulted masterpiece
King's College Chapel took almost a century to build, from 1446 to 1515, and it is one of the finest examples of late Gothic architecture in the world. Inside, the most extraordinary sight is the stone fan-vaulted ceiling, the largest of its kind anywhere, spreading like delicate stone fans across the entire length of the building without any central support.
The chapel's tall windows hold one of the most complete sets of early sixteenth-century stained glass in the world, telling Bible stories in rich blues, reds and golds. A carved wooden screen divides the space, and an altarpiece painting stands at the east end. Is King's College Chapel worth visiting? It is often called the most beautiful building in Cambridge, and the light inside is unforgettable.
