Full Description
Llandudno, the Victorian seaside town
Llandudno is the largest seaside resort in Wales, a Victorian town on the north coast between the Great Orme and the Little Orme headlands. Its pier, the longest in Wales, reaches about 700 metres over the sea, and the sweep of the bay with its promenade and pastel hotels is one of the classic views of North Wales.
You have about 45 minutes here, enough to stroll along the seafront and the pier, take photographs and have a hot drink. Llandudno is the answer if you are searching for an easy day trip from Liverpool to the Welsh coast, because the drive is about an hour and a half and leaves plenty of time for the rest of the route.
Conwy Castle and the walled town
Conwy is one of the best-preserved medieval walled towns in Britain. King Edward I built Conwy Castle in the 1280s, with eight great towers, and the town walls, about 1.3 kilometres long, still surround the old streets. Thomas Telford's suspension bridge of 1826 crosses the river beside the castle.
You have around 75 minutes of free time in Conwy for lunch, the harbour and the Smallest House in Great Britain. Entering the castle is optional and costs extra, and the tour does not include it. Many visitors ask if Conwy Castle is worth visiting, and the towers and walls give some of the finest views in Wales.
Snowdonia and Betws-y-Coed
Snowdonia National Park, known in Welsh as Eryri, is the mountain heart of North Wales. The tour visits the Ogwen Valley, a wild, glacier-carved valley with a lake and dramatic peaks, for a photo stop and short walk before you continue on scenic mountain roads.
Betws-y-Coed is a village on the river in a wooded valley, with a stone bridge, outdoor shops and cafes. You spend about 45 minutes there, and along the way you may see Swallow Falls from the vehicle. If you are searching for a Snowdonia day trip from Liverpool without a car, this combined route is one of the most complete ways to do it.
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal across the Dee Valley on cast-iron arches, about 38 metres above the river and 307 metres long. Thomas Telford and William Jessop built it, and it opened in 1805. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 2009.
The tour stops for about 30 minutes so you can look at the structure and, if you are feeling adventurous, walk across the towpath for views over the valley. The final stage is the drive back to Liverpool, arriving at the World Museum in the early evening. Bring a jacket, since it can be windy on the aqueduct.
