Full Description
The Tower of London
The Tower of London has stood on the Thames since the 1070s, when William the Conqueror began the White Tower to control the city. Over the centuries it served as a royal palace, fortress, mint, armoury, menagerie and prison, and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Anyone planning a Tower of London tour will find a complex of walls, towers and courtyards that can easily fill three hours.
The tickets are valid for one day and give access to the main areas, with last admission one hour before closing. Opening hours change by season and the Tower is closed on some days, so check the time slot and date on the booking panel. Arriving at opening time helps you enjoy the Crown Jewels with shorter queues.
The Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels are the most popular sight in the Tower. This working collection of coronation regalia includes the Imperial State Crown, set with thousands of diamonds and gems, and the Sovereign's Sceptre with the Cullinan I diamond, one of the largest cut diamonds in the world.
During busy periods, long queues are expected for the Crown Jewels, so go early or late in the day. A moving walkway carries you past the most valuable pieces, and you can walk back to see more closely if you wish. The exhibition also explains the history of the regalia, including how the oldest pieces were destroyed and remade after the Civil War.
The White Tower, the Medieval Palace and Tower Green
The White Tower houses the Royal Armouries collection, including suits of armour worn by kings, and the Line of Kings. The Medieval Palace shows how the Plantagenet kings lived, and the Bloody Tower and Tower Green are linked to some of the most famous prisoners and executions, among them two of Henry VIII's queens.
Public Yeoman Warder tours, led by the Tower's resident guardians in their scarlet uniforms, are included with the entry ticket and are the best way to hear the stories of the fortress. Traitors' Gate and the Royal Menagerie, an early royal zoo, are also worth a look.
The ravens and how to get to the Tower of London
Legend says that if the ravens leave the Tower, the kingdom will fall, so a Ravenmaster keeps a small group of ravens on the grounds. Children love spotting them near the White Tower, and adults enjoy the stories that surround each bird.
Getting to the Tower of London is easy: Tower Hill station (District line) is a two-minute walk, and Tower Gateway on the DLR and Fenchurch Street station are also close. Tower Bridge is right next door, so combine the two for a full London day, and remember that a river boat from Westminster is another scenic way to arrive.
