Full Description
Top of the Rock and the Ozark Mountains
The Ozarks are an ancient, heavily forested highland covering parts of Missouri and Arkansas, carved by rivers into steep hollows, limestone bluffs, springs and caves. Top of the Rock sits on a ridge in Ridgedale, about 15 minutes south of Branson, overlooking Table Rock Lake, a reservoir created in 1958 by damming the White River, with hundreds of kilometres of wooded shoreline.
The preserve was developed to celebrate the natural beauty and heritage of the region, and its landscaped grounds, stone buildings and viewing terraces are among the most photographed places in the Branson area. If you are wondering whether Top of the Rock is worth visiting, the combination of lake views, nature and history in one place makes it a highlight of any trip to the Ozarks.
Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail
The heart of the visit is the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail, a 4-kilometre paved route that you follow at your own pace in an electric cart. The trail winds down into a wooded canyon, across rustic bridges and past cascading waterfalls, moss-covered boulders and dramatic limestone formations shaped over thousands of years by water seeping through the rock.
Along the way you drive right through a large natural cave, where waterfalls pour from the ceiling, and you can stop at several points to walk, take photos and listen to the streams. The climax is the Eagle's Nest overlook, a high viewpoint with panoramic views over the hills and lake. Most visitors spend about one and a half hours on the trail.
Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum
After the trail, the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum invites you to travel back through time. The museum covers around 3,250 square metres and opens with impressive skeletons and life-size models of prehistoric creatures that once roamed North America, from giant mammals of the Ice Age to ancient predators, displayed in atmospheric settings.
Further galleries tell the story of the American West, the Civil War in the Ozarks and the region's early settlers, but the highlight for many visitors is an extensive collection of Native American artefacts and artwork: pottery, tools, weapons, beadwork and ceremonial objects, presented with care and respect. Allow about an hour, or longer if you enjoy history.
