Full Description
Space Center Houston and NASA's human spaceflight centre
Houston has been the heart of American human spaceflight since the 1960s. NASA's space centre here houses Mission Control, which guided the moon landings and today runs the International Space Station, as well as the facilities where astronauts train. Space Center Houston, its official visitor centre, opened in 1992 and tells this story through hundreds of real artefacts, interactive exhibits and films.
The centre lies about 40 kilometres south-east of downtown Houston, near the Clear Lake area, and the drive takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. If you are wondering how to get to Space Center Houston, a car, taxi or rideshare is the easiest option, as public transport is limited. Parking is available on site for an extra fee, paid at the car park.
Moon rocks, spacecraft and the main exhibits
The starship gallery displays real spacecraft and capsules from the early programmes of the space race, along with spacesuits, tools and a moon rock you can touch. Nearby, the lunar samples vault holds the largest collection of moon rocks on public view in the world. Other galleries explore the International Space Station, life in orbit and the plans to send humans to Mars, with hands-on exhibits that children enjoy.
Outdoors, Independence Plaza lets you climb inside a full-size space shuttle replica mounted on the original jumbo jet that once carried the shuttles across the country. You can also walk around and beneath a full-size reusable rocket booster, standing more than 45 metres long. Theatre shows throughout the day add films and presentations, so plan at least four to five hours to see everything.
The NASA tram tour behind the scenes
Your ticket includes the NASA tram tour, which leaves the visitor centre and drives into the working space centre next door. Depending on the day and on operations, the tram stops at the astronaut training facility, where you look down on full-size mock-ups of spacecraft used for training, and at Rocket Park, which shelters a restored Saturn V, the giant rocket that launched astronauts to the moon, lying on its side in its own hall.
A boarding pass is required for the tram tour and is collected on the day at the visitor centre; instructions are printed on your ticket. Because places are limited, it is best to collect your pass as soon as you arrive. The Historic Mission Control tram tour is a separate experience and is not included in this ticket. Is Space Center Houston worth visiting? For anyone interested in space, it is one of the best things to do in Houston.
Planning your visit: hours, timing and tips
Space Center Houston opening hours vary by season, usually from mid-morning until late afternoon, with longer hours in summer and holidays. Your ticket has a timed entry slot, and you can choose any hour from opening until mid-afternoon. Note that your admission time is not your tram tour time. Arriving early in the day gives you the best choice of tram tour times and quieter galleries.
The best time to visit Space Center Houston is on a weekday outside school holidays, when the exhibits are less crowded. Houston summers are hot and humid, but almost everything is indoors and air-conditioned, apart from Independence Plaza and the rocket booster display. Food and drinks are available to buy on site and are not included. Children under three enter free but still need a timed ticket.
