Full Description
Downtown Houston and City Hall
The tour begins in downtown Houston, where glass and steel towers rise above the streets that were laid out when the city was founded in 1836. From the upper deck you have unobstructed views of the skyline, including some of the tallest buildings in Texas, and of the 1939 limestone City Hall with the reflecting pool and plaza in front of it. Your guide explains how oil, shipping and later the space programme turned a muddy river town into a global city.
You also pass Market Square, the historic heart of old Houston, and Discovery Green, a modern downtown park with lawns, a lake and public art. Below the streets lies a network of air-conditioned pedestrian tunnels linking dozens of buildings, a local answer to the summer heat that your guide will tell you about. A Houston city tour by bus is the easiest way to see all this in one go.
The Theater District
Just west of the business towers, the Theater District brings together a remarkable concentration of performing arts venues within a few blocks. Houston is one of the few American cities with resident professional companies in opera, ballet, symphony music and theatre, and their halls stand side by side here, from modern glass façades to striking brick and stone buildings.
From the bus you see the main halls and the plazas between them, and your guide shares stories about the district's revival and the shows that draw audiences from across the region. If you plan to attend a performance during your stay, this part of the tour helps you get your bearings, as the district is easily reached on foot from downtown hotels.
Buffalo Bayou
Houston was founded on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, the slow, winding waterway that flows through the city towards the port and the sea. For years it was hidden behind highways, but today it is the green spine of the city, with a long riverside park, trails, gardens and some of the best views of the downtown skyline, especially in the late afternoon light.
Your guide explains how the bayou shaped the city's history, from the first riverboat landing to the huge port that grew downstream, and how recent restoration projects turned it into one of Houston's favourite outdoor spaces. If you have time after the tour, the park's paths and viewpoints are a pleasant place to return to for a relaxed stroll or a kayak trip.
Midtown
South of downtown, Midtown is one of Houston's liveliest neighbourhoods, known for its colourful street murals, independent cafés, restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world and new apartment buildings mixed with older brick houses. The district reflects the city's remarkable diversity, as Houston is one of the most international cities in the United States.
From the open deck you catch the street art and the energy of the neighbourhood, while your guide points out good places to eat and the cultural communities that give Houston its character. It is a useful part of the tour if you are looking for a lunch or dinner spot later in the day. The neighbourhood lies on the light-rail line linking downtown with the Museum District, so it is easy to come back after the tour.
The Museum District and the city's great park
The tour continues to the Museum District, a leafy area of tree-lined streets where art galleries, science museums and cultural centres stand close together, many of them free to enter on certain days. The Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural Science and the children's museum are all here, alongside sculpture gardens and the modern art buildings set among quiet lawns.
Right next door lies the city's largest central park, with a lake, a Japanese-style garden, an outdoor theatre and the Houston Zoo, while the vast Texas Medical Center rises just beyond. Is the Houston Museum District worth visiting? Absolutely, and this tour helps you choose which museums to return to. The bus then loops back towards downtown, where the tour ends.
