Full Description

The Florida Reef and the living coral

The reef that lies a few miles off the Florida Keys is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, and part of one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world. In the clear water you can see brain coral, sea fans, parrotfish, angelfish, snappers and sometimes a passing turtle or barracuda, all within an easy swim of the boat.

Many visitors ask whether snorkelling in Key West is worth it. The answer is yes if you want colourful coral and tropical fish without a long trip: the cruise reaches the reef in around half an hour, so most of your three hours is spent in the water or relaxing on deck.

Your catamaran cruise

The catamaran is wide and stable, with a shaded area, a sundeck and a boarding ladder that makes it easy to get in and out of the sea. The twin hulls reduce rolling, so the crossing is comfortable even if you do not usually enjoy boats. Our Key West snorkelling catamaran sails from the departure dock, and you check in 30 minutes before departure at the times shown below.

The crew welcome you, brief you on safety and point out the marine life you may see. If sea conditions change, the captain may pick a different reef site on the day to find the best visibility and the calmest water.

Snorkelling instruction for beginners

You do not need experience for a Key West snorkelling trip. The crew hand out masks, snorkels and fins, show you how to clear the mask and breathe through the tube, and stay in the water or on deck to help. Professional instruction is included, and the crew keep a close watch while you swim.

If you wear glasses or have a small child, tell the crew when you check in so they can help with fitting. A wetsuit can be rented seasonally for a fee, which is worth considering in winter when the water can feel cool. A towel is not provided, so bring your own.

Choosing your departure time

The morning departure leaves at 9:30 with check-in at 9:00, and it often has the calmest water and the lightest crowd. The afternoon departure leaves at 1:00 PM with check-in at 12:30 and gives you a more relaxed start to the day. Both include the same snorkelling, instruction and soft drinks and water.

The evening departure leaves at 4:00 PM and finishes with a sunset sail back to Key West, which is a great option if you want snorkelling and golden-hour views in one trip. The best season for snorkelling is generally late spring and summer when the water is warm and clear, though winter trips run too when conditions allow.
