Stand on the rim of Horseshoe Bend just after sunrise and the silence is total. Far below, the Colorado River curls in a perfect emerald loop around a tower of red sandstone, ravens ride the warm air rising from the canyon, and the cliffs change from rose to deep orange as the sun climbs. Behind you, the high desert stretches away in every direction, dotted with juniper and sagebrush, under a sky of astonishing blue.

Page at first sight
Page is a young desert town, founded in the late 1950s to house the builders of Glen Canyon Dam, and it sits on a mesa above Lake Powell at the edge of the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona. It has become the gateway to some of the most photographed landscapes in the American Southwest: the slot canyons of Antelope Canyon, carved by flash floods and lit by shafts of sunlight, the deep blue arms of Lake Powell and the sweeping bends of Glen Canyon.
Why include Page in your itinerary?
- Slot canyons of breathtaking beauty. Upper Antelope Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon and Canyon X lie on Navajo land, where wind and water have sculpted the sandstone into flowing waves of orange, red and violet. Access is only with authorised Navajo guides, who share the meaning of these places along with the best photo angles.
- The great bend of the Colorado. A short walk from the edge of town leads to Horseshoe Bend, where the river wraps around a sandstone tower hundreds of metres below the rim, while nearby the Glen Canyon Dam overlook reveals the scale of the canyon and the river released from the lake.
- A lake in the desert. Lake Powell's turquoise water winds through red-rock canyons for great distances, perfect for boat trips, kayaking into narrow side canyons and lazy beach days at Lone Rock, with the natural stone arch of Rainbow Bridge reachable by boat when lake levels allow.
Signature experiences in Page
Upper Antelope Canyon
Upper Antelope Canyon is entered at ground level and is wider at the bottom than the top, so light pours in from above and paints the curving walls in orange and gold. Around midday from late spring to early autumn, narrow beams of sunlight reach the sandy floor, a sight photographers dream of. Our guided canyon tours are led by Navajo guides, who know where to stand and share stories of the land.
Lower Antelope Canyon
Lower Antelope Canyon is a narrow, V-shaped slot reached by steep metal staircases that descend into the earth. Inside, the passage twists and climbs through spirals and corridors of sandstone, glowing with reflected light and often quieter in feel than its upper twin. Our guided canyon tours with Navajo guides handle the timing and safety briefing, and the visit suits anyone comfortable with stairs and tight spaces.
Canyon X
A short drive east of the main canyons, Canyon X is named for the two slot canyons that cross each other in an X shape. Visitors walk down a sandy trail and stairs into tall, narrow chambers where light falls in soft shafts. Groups are usually smaller and the pace calmer, leaving more time for photographs. Our guided Navajo tours here are a lovely alternative or addition to Upper and Lower Antelope.
Horseshoe Bend and Glen Canyon Dam
A well-maintained trail of about twenty minutes each way leads from the parking area to the rim of Horseshoe Bend, best at sunrise or in the late afternoon light. Nearby, the overlook and visitor centre at Glen Canyon Dam explain how the lake was formed and offer views straight down the canyon. A private car with driver from our team links these viewpoints easily with your canyon tour.
Lake Powell by Boat and Kayak
From the marina at Wahweap, boat trips glide between towering sandstone walls into side canyons, and when water levels allow, continue to Rainbow Bridge National Monument, a vast natural stone arch sacred to the Navajo people. Kayakers can paddle calm channels into narrow canyons, and Lone Rock Beach is a favourite spot for swimming. Our team can arrange your lake trip and transfers to the marina.
Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Page
Page Town Centre
The small town centre along Lake Powell Boulevard holds most of the hotels, restaurants, shops and supermarkets, with canyon tour meeting points a short drive away. It is safe, practical and quiet in the evenings, ideal for first-time visitors who want everything close at hand before early tour departures.
Wahweap and the Lakeshore
About fifteen minutes north of town, the lakeshore at Wahweap offers lodging with views over Lake Powell's red-rock islands, a large marina and easy access to Lone Rock Beach across the Utah line. It is peaceful and scenic, perfect for travellers planning boat trips, kayaking or simply long sunsets over the water.
Marble Canyon and Lees Ferry
About forty-five minutes southwest, this remote stretch below the Vermilion Cliffs has small rustic lodges near Navajo Bridge and Lees Ferry, where river trips into the Grand Canyon begin. It is wild, quiet and dark at night, ideal for stargazers, hikers and travellers who love open landscapes and true solitude.
Kanab, Utah
About an hour and a quarter northwest, the small town of Kanab is a popular base between Page, Zion and Bryce Canyon, with a relaxed main street, motels and restaurants. It suits road-trippers who want to combine Antelope Canyon with the national parks of southern Utah on the same journey.
How long to stay in Page and how to pair it
Recommended stay
We recommend two nights in Page. One day for Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend at sunset, and a second for another slot canyon such as Canyon X or Lower Antelope, the Glen Canyon Dam overlook and time on Lake Powell. With three nights, add a lake cruise, kayaking or a drive to Lees Ferry and the Vermilion Cliffs.
How to pair it
Page sits at the heart of the great canyon country. The Grand Canyon's South Rim is about two and a half hours away, Monument Valley about two hours, and Zion National Park in Utah about two hours. A seven-day loop from Las Vegas can combine Zion, Page and the Grand Canyon. In ten days, add Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley. A fourteen-day journey can continue south through Sedona and Phoenix, or end with a few days in Los Angeles.
Best time to visit Page and the rhythm of the day
Best months
The best time to visit Page is from March to May and from September to October, when days are warm and sunny and nights are cool. The famous light beams in Upper Antelope Canyon appear around midday from roughly late March to early October. Summer is very hot, and the July to September monsoon can bring flash floods that close the canyons for safety. Winter is cold and quiet, with soft light and fewer visitors.
The daily rhythm
Page's day follows the sun. Early risers catch sunrise at Horseshoe Bend before the heat and the crowds. Canyon tours run throughout the day, with the brightest beams in Upper Antelope around midday. Afternoons are for the lake or a rest in the shade, and evenings end with sunset over Lake Powell and a sky full of stars in the clear desert air.
On-the-ground logistics in Page
Arrival
Page Municipal Airport (PGA) is a few minutes from town but has only limited commuter flights. Most travellers arrive via the international airports of Las Vegas (LAS) or Phoenix (PHX), each about four and a half hours by road, or via Flagstaff's airport (FLG), about two and a half hours away. We arrange private transfers from the airport straight to your hotel in Page.
Getting around
Page is small and easy to navigate, but there is no public transport to the canyons, Horseshoe Bend or the lake, so a car is essential. Canyon tours start from meeting points just outside town, where Navajo guides take over. Distances to Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon and Utah's parks are long, and a private car with driver arranged by our team makes them relaxed and safe.
Local etiquette tip
Antelope Canyon lies on Navajo Nation land, so follow your Navajo guide's instructions, stay with your group and treat the canyons as the special places they are. Bags are usually not allowed inside, drones are prohibited and tripods are restricted. Note that the Navajo Nation observes daylight saving time while the rest of Arizona does not, so in summer always confirm which clock your tour time uses. Tipping guides is customary. Halal restaurants are hard to find in Page, so plan meals ahead; Phoenix and Las Vegas offer a much wider choice.
