Full Description
Eastern State Penitentiary: a revolutionary prison
When Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829, it was the largest and most expensive public building in the young United States. Behind its Gothic-style walls, reformers tested a new idea known as the Pennsylvania System: each prisoner lived alone in a cell, in silence, with a skylight above, so that solitude would lead to reflection and change. Prisoners were even hooded when moved, so they never saw one another.
The building's radial plan, with long cellblocks spreading like the spokes of a wheel from a central surveillance hub, was copied by prisons across Europe, South America and Asia. Each cell had running water and central heating long before many American mansions did. The solitary system was abandoned by the early 20th century, and the prison closed in 1971. It reopened as a museum in 1994 and is a National Historic Landmark.
Inside the cellblocks: what you will see
Today you walk through corridors where ceilings arch high overhead, paint peels from the walls and light falls through the old skylights onto empty cells. Some cellblocks are left as atmospheric ruins, while others have been stabilised so you can step inside and imagine life in solitude. The central rotunda shows how a single guard could watch every corridor at once.
Highlights include the restored synagogue, created by Jewish inmates in the 1920s, the two-storey cellblock with its balconies, the bleak cells of Death Row and the baseball field where prisoners later played on Saturdays. One cell is furnished as it was for a notorious 1920s inmate, with rugs and lamps, a striking contrast to the bare rooms around it. Plan at least 90 minutes to two hours inside.
Audio tour, mini tours and exhibitions
The audio tour is included in your Eastern State Penitentiary tickets and guides you through the main cellblocks with the voices of former guards and prisoners, historians and staff. It is available in English and several other languages, and you choose which stops to hear. When staff are available, short guide-led mini tours add stories about escapes, daily routines and the building's architecture.
The exhibitions look beyond the walls: an award-winning exhibit explores how prisons and justice work in America today, with interactive displays that invite you to think about your own views. Artists also create installations in the empty cells, so each visit can reveal something new. Is Eastern State Penitentiary worth visiting? For anyone curious about history or architecture, it is among the most memorable museums in Philadelphia.
