Full Description

Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage town

Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese on a small peninsula directly opposite Buenos Aires, as a bold outpost in territory claimed by Spain. For almost a century the two crowns fought over it, and the town changed hands several times through sieges and treaties. That turbulent history left a unique mix of Portuguese and Spanish town planning, which earned the historic quarter its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995.

Today the Barrio Histórico is a peaceful world of stone and adobe houses, tiled roofs, bougainvillea, old street lamps and vintage cars parked under the plane trees. Is Colonia del Sacramento worth visiting? It is the most popular day trip from Montevideo, and its slow pace, river views and colonial atmosphere make it a favourite of photographers and families alike.

The city gate, the drawbridge and the Street of Sighs

Your guided visit begins at the Portón de Campo, the old city gate, with a wooden drawbridge crossing a dry moat and a section of the 18th-century fortified wall. Walking through it is like stepping back into colonial times, and it is the perfect place for a first photo. From here, cobbled streets lead into the heart of the old town.

The most famous of them is the Calle de los Suspiros, the Street of Sighs, a narrow lane sloping down towards the river with a central channel for rainwater and low colonial houses painted in soft colours. Its uneven stones were laid in the Portuguese style, adapted to the shape of the land. Your guide explains the different legends behind its name, and the morning light makes it one of the most photogenic streets in South America.

Plaza Mayor, the lighthouse and the convent ruins

At the centre of the old town lies the Plaza Mayor, a large, shady square framed by historic houses, small museums and the remains of the old governor's residence. Nearby, the white lighthouse built in 1857 rises above the stone ruins of a 17th-century convent, one of the oldest structures in Uruguay. When it is open, you can climb to the top for views over the rooftops and the river.

A short walk away stands the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament, one of the oldest churches in the country, rebuilt several times over the centuries on its original site. Your guide connects these landmarks with the story of the Portuguese and Spanish rivalry. Small museums around the square, dedicated to the Portuguese and Spanish periods, can be visited during free time; entry is not included.

The riverside walls, free time and how to get to Colonia

The old town is bordered by the Río de la Plata, so wide here that it looks like the sea, with Buenos Aires on the far shore. Walk along the riverside walls and the small beaches for calm views, then use your free time to have lunch in a café, browse craft and leather shops or visit a museum. Sunset by the river is famous, but on this tour you return to Montevideo in the late afternoon.
