Full Description
The coastal road from Montevideo through Canelones
Your Punta del Este day trip from Montevideo begins with a scenic drive east along the Río de la Plata. Leaving the capital's long riverside promenade behind, the road crosses the department of Canelones, a landscape of gentle hills, pine and eucalyptus forests, small seaside towns and wide sandy beaches that fill with families from December to March.
On the way, your guide shares the history of the region, from the early Spanish and Portuguese rivalry over the river to the creation of Uruguay's coastal resorts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, along with some of the mysterious legends linked to the area. The journey to Punta del Este takes about two hours, with stops along the coast, and the air-conditioned vehicle makes it comfortable in every season.
Piriápolis, the city of the sun
Piriápolis was created in the 1890s as one of the first seaside resorts in South America, planned by a visionary entrepreneur who dreamed of a European-style spa town on the coast. Its curved seafront promenade, the rambla, follows a sweeping sandy bay framed by green hills, and the town is famous for its sunny climate, earning it the nickname the city of the sun.
The highlight of the stop is the grand seafront hotel opened in 1930, once the largest in South America, whose elegant facade still dominates the promenade. Many buildings in Piriápolis carry esoteric symbols, linked to the founder's interest in alchemy and ancient orders, which your guide explains. The stop is short, about 15 minutes, perfect for photos of the bay and the hills behind it.
Punta Ballena and Casapueblo
Punta Ballena is a rocky headland that juts into the sea between Punta del Este and the coast towards Montevideo, offering one of the best panoramas in Uruguay. On its cliffs stands Casapueblo, a sculpture-like white building that an Uruguayan artist built by hand over several decades, inspired by the mud nests of the ovenbird. With its domes, terraces and curved walls, it looks like a Mediterranean village melted into the rock.
Casapueblo houses a museum and workshop of the artist's paintings, ceramics and sculptures, as well as a hotel. You have about 35 minutes here to admire the building and the views; entry to the museum is not included and is paid on site if you wish to go in. Is Casapueblo worth visiting? Its terraces offer one of the most beautiful sea views on the trip.
Punta del Este: the peninsula, the port and Lobos Island
Punta del Este occupies a narrow peninsula where the calm waters of the Río de la Plata meet the Atlantic Ocean. On the western side, Mansa beach has gentle waves, while the eastern Brava beach faces the open ocean. The panoramic tour follows the peninsula past elegant apartment towers, the historic lighthouse and the white church, before reaching the busy yacht port.
At the port, fishermen sell their catch, and sea lions often swim right up to the quay waiting for scraps. From the waterfront you can see Lobos Island, about 10 km offshore, with its tall lighthouse and one of the largest sea lion colonies in South America. A Punta del Este tour with a guide helps you understand how this fishing village became the most glamorous resort in the region.
The Hand on Brava beach and free time in Punta del Este
The most famous monument in Punta del Este is the giant hand sculpture, whose five concrete fingers emerge from the sand of Brava beach as if reaching for the sky. Created in 1982 by a Chilean sculptor during an open-air art meeting, it has become the symbol of the city and is one of the most photographed spots in Uruguay.
After the panoramic tour, you have about three hours of free time to stroll the shopping streets, relax on the beach or enjoy the included three-course lunch, with a starter, main course and dessert, at a restaurant in the centre. The best time to visit Punta del Este is from December to March for beach life, while spring and autumn are calmer and perfect for sightseeing.
