Full Description

The Karlskirche on Karlsplatz

The Karlskirche, or St Charles's Church, is Vienna's finest baroque church and stands on Karlsplatz beside the Musikverein and the Secession. Emperor Charles VI vowed to build it during the plague of 1713 and dedicated it to St Charles Borromeo, a saint associated with the sick. It was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by his son Joseph Emanuel in 1737.

Its outline is unmistakable: a great green copper dome, a classical portico and two tall columns modelled on Trajan's Column in Rome, carved with scenes from the life of the saint. It is one of the most photographed sights in the city.

The dome fresco and the panoramic lift

Inside, the dome is covered with a fresco by Johann Michael Rottmayr, which normally you can see only from far below. A panoramic lift and a viewing gallery in the dome bring you close enough to see the brushwork and figures in detail.

From the top of the lift you can look down into the nave, and a short climb leads to the rooftop terrace with a panorama of the Ringstrasse, the Belvedere and the towers of the city centre. This is the reason many people ask whether the Karlskirche panoramic terrace is worth it, and it is.

Treasury, organ loft and church model

Your ticket also includes the church's treasury, with liturgical objects and reliquaries, and a view of the organ loft, where you can see the organ up close. There is a model of the church that explains how the architecture was conceived.

An audio guide is included and explains the main sights in the church. A guided tour is not part of the ticket, so the audio guide is your companion, and it allows you to move at your own pace. Because the visit is self-guided with an audio guide, you can linger as long as you like at the fresco, the terrace and the treasury, and skip anything that does not interest you.

Practical visit: how to get to the Karlskirche

To get to the Karlskirche, take the U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz. The church is a two-minute walk from the station and is close to the Opera and the Naschmarkt.

Your ticket is valid for one day and gives skip-the-ticket-queue entry. Opening hours change by season, and the church closes for services and events, so check your date on the booking panel. Allow about an hour. The Musikverein, the Secession building and the Naschmarkt are all within a short walk, so the Karlskirche fits easily into a day of Vienna highlights, and Resselpark offers a green place to rest.
