Full Description
The Votivkirche on the Ringstrasse
The Votivkirche is a neo-Gothic church on Rooseveltplatz, built between 1856 and 1879 to the designs of Heinrich von Ferstel. Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, the emperor's brother, launched an appeal to build it in thanks for Franz Joseph's survival after an assassination attempt in 1853, which is why it is called the votive church.
Its twin spires and lacework stonework echo the great Gothic cathedrals of France and Germany, and it is regarded as one of the most important neo-Gothic buildings in Europe. Inside, tall pillars and pointed vaults create exactly the kind of sacred, echoing space that a light show can bring to life.
Light of Creation: the immersive light show
Light of Creation is a 30-minute show that uses state-of-the-art projection to cover walls, columns and vaults with moving light, colour and sound. The story follows Genesis in six acts, starting in darkness, moving through the formation of the universe and ending with the flowering of life on Earth.
The specially composed score ranges from gentle sounds to powerful, celebratory passages, so the experience feels more like being inside a painting than watching a film. If you are wondering whether the Light of Creation show is worth it, it suits anyone who enjoys atmosphere, architecture and contemporary art.
Seating categories and what you will see
The Category I ticket gives an unrestricted view of the projections from the best part of the nave, which is the choice we recommend. The Category II ticket is a lower-priced seat with a partially restricted view, where a pillar or the church furniture may block part of the scene.
Because the show wraps around the whole church, even Category II gives a good sense of the atmosphere. Check the description beside each option on the booking panel before you choose. Flash photography is not allowed, and the show is best enjoyed without a screen between you and the walls, so put your phone away and let the projections move around you.
Practical visit: getting there and rules to know
