Full Description

The Upper Belvedere palace

The Upper Belvedere was built in the early eighteenth century by the architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt for Prince Eugene of Savoy, the great general who defeated the Ottomans. It stands at the top of a sloping formal garden, with the Lower Belvedere below, and the pair is one of the finest Baroque ensembles in Europe. If you are looking for Upper Belvedere tickets, this timed entry ticket takes you into the palace to see its permanent collection.

Later, Empress Maria Theresa acquired the complex and it became one of the first public museums in the world. Its state rooms, staircase and Marble Hall are attractions in themselves, so allow time to look up as well as at the paintings.

Klimt's The Kiss and the golden period

The Upper Belvedere holds Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, painted around 1907 to 1908 and one of the most reproduced paintings in the world. Around it hang other Klimt works from his golden period, including Judith, as well as landscapes and portraits that show how his style evolved.

The Klimt room is popular, so a timed slot helps you see The Kiss without too long a wait. Is the Belvedere worth visiting just for The Kiss? For many visitors, yes: but the surrounding rooms of Schiele, Kokoschka and Viennese modernism make it a full museum visit, not a single-painting stop.

Schiele, Kokoschka and Austrian art

Beyond Klimt, the collection follows Austrian art from the medieval and Baroque periods through the Biedermeier era to Viennese modernism around 1900. You will find important works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, plus French Impressionists such as Monet and a selection of other European masters.

The Marble Hall, where the Austrian State Treaty was signed in 1955, is the historic core of the building, and the sculptures and views from the upper floor across the gardens towards the city are a highlight. An audio guide is not included in the ticket and can be added separately at the museum.
